The old version had steel mounting flanges that did not need paint. It would be very odd to not have the tank ends plated at the same time as the flanges.I’m glad I got the original. Mud and crap will get into the new one. If that’s steel on the end, it will need to be painted. Glad I got the original.
That was a great thread. Maybe even worthy of a medalThis sounds eerily familiar to the guy who took his TJ on 33s and Savvy under armor who went off-roading in JV, smacked the skid on a rock, and was then rather upset about how the skid plate was all bent out of shape.
The skid did it's job, but somehow it was supposed to do more than it was designed to do.
looks cool, but most of that fancy cutout work will be obscured once it's mounted, no?
the sides are steel? looks lo like mill finish aluminum to me. if it is steel they are spending time making it to pretty cause it'd need painted.
I don't know if that is true, do we really need that much stupid around here? That was a great thread. Maybe even worthy of a medal
post 43 explained why it appears as it does. that'll work.
Fair point. There was a lot of stupid in that one, but it also wound up as a teaching moment to some that think a skid is only good if it’s the plate steel they throw over holes in the roadI don't know if that is true, do we really need that much stupid around here?
Aluminum is 1/3 the weight of steel so for it to be the same weight as before, there would need to be 2/3's of the area of the steel end cap removed. It looks to me like there is about 1/2 or so removed, so it should come in a couple pounds heavier. What’s the weight difference in the new design vs the old design?
I personally hope they are saving a few bucks in the manufacturing process, still providing a great quality product and pocketing a nice profit. It’s those profits that can be sunk back into R&D to further refine existing or develop new and innovative products.I’m sure they’re saving a lot of fab time doing away with welding the sides, that should save them money.
The steel sides are probably cut out on a laser, bent on a brake just like the old sides, then plated rather than painted.
I plated all my machinery parts as opposed to painting. Plating was way cheaper.
That being said, their new design may be saving them some money. Wonder if that would be reflected in the consumer price. Or if that savings will be keeping the prices the same because of overall increases in labor and materials.
No, not at all. It remains a great skid, I've been running since they first came out and despite mine having been slammed down onto big rocks a lot it's still unscathed and undented. Great design, great product. With the change in design, is there any reason to choose a different gas tank skid over the Savvy skid?
