The noise I’m hearing- is when driving- to me it sounds like a bad bearing- the typical drone sound with speed/rpm/ rolling.

I jacked up the entire front end yesterday.

I then hand rotated the tires forward and backwards for quite a long time, tried to pull the top of the tires out and and in at the bottom for quite some time..
No abnormal noises were heard during rotation- ball joints were tight-. I’m going to replace a few worn out front suspension parts next weekend.

I was going to elevate the entire rear of the jeep today- and do the same procedures- I did to front drive system…*I was not able to do that today..I will do that next weekend also**

To my ears..( I have years of mechanical background, however I don’t know everything and I’m not too proud to ask questions)..it’s more noise in the front cabin area of the jeep..( I have heard many strange vehicle noises since my dad started to teach me how to build race engines when I was 12..I’m 61 now)
Still sounds like a bearing of some sort…and sounds like it coming from the automatic transmission…start to hear the noise at about 25mph- the more fuel I provide to the engine, the higher the rpm, the higher acceleration…..— the more drone sound I hear- when I decelerate..I hear the noise slow down- at deceleration going down a slight hill (on street) the noise changes sounds slightly- going up a slight hill the noise changes sound slightly……..

I will state- the auto tranny shifts perfect in all gear ranges, no knocking, not slow to engage from P-R or P-D or D-R or D-P or D to OD—-no tranny codes either.

Jeep engine- runs smooth, no knocking, no unusual, Noises that I can hear.

I have posted a few images that I took on Saturday Afternoon..I believe or maybe Sunday afternoon..🤷‍♂️ of the rear undercarriage area. I do see a seeping pinion seal…and possibly slinging gear oil above and on the back of the transfer case..

Pull the front driveshaft and see if it goes away-

the front driveshaft cardan joint failing is typically catastrophic for a TJ.

Keep us posted.

Good move- pulling the front shaft for vibes and driveline noise is a “go to” move most good shops do first.

Well, I went to crank up the jeep at about 6 AM- this morning-engine sat overnight and wad cold- I heard a faint noise from the transmission…

I going to get my stethoscope out of hiding and listen to the internals of the transmission while the engine is running, hopefully I’ll be able to do that within the next couple days.

I video with sound the undercarriage noises I hear in the front interior cabin area when driving this jeep to and from work approximately-80-90 miles per day (5) days a week- Jeep now has over 148K— to far the noise or noises have not gotten worse..I guess that will change ..I know it will change. I haven’t had the time on the weekends yet to do more investigating/locating the general areas of said noises…video is about 15m long.

Watch the video...
Just start at 1:00 and listen to the sound. Then at 1:07 while you are still moving at a good speed it instantly disappears. Why?

Because you let up on the gas for the stop light.

Did it again at 8:40.

Stopped watching because that is a wheel bearing.

I was thinking about a wheel bearings- possibly on right side.

Thanks for taking your time to view my video and listen to the noises.
I appreciate that👍

I also saw where the tone/pitch changed but forgot to look at the clock. It changed when you were going around the long sweeping left bend in the road.

Yep! Your correct.. today as I have preplanned.. going to jack up the entire front of the jeep, remove both front rims/tires and check both wheel bearings

Since the noise does not start a 1 mph you may not detect anything wrong. Might have to check for movement in the bearing rather than grinding.

I do understand that.. but I can feel a slight grinding when slowing to a crawl speed (idle no break) and moving/rolling forward

I did change out the right side bearing hub..took a while…but some of the noise is not as bad as it was…now on to checking the Left side tomorrow..if I’m not too tired

Still have a noise.. to track down.
But the cabin is a bit quite now since this bearing was changed.. still sounds like something in the auto tranny. I got something I’ve had for a long time and I’m gonna listen to the transmission intervals with it tomorrow.. when jeep is started/running in park with wheels chalk

Try a tire rotation.

Be sure to listen for tone changes and what you did to cause the change. Example: I picked up on the bearing because you let off the gas.

Weil, today I replace all the fuel injectors on the 4.0…along with new plugs…she’s running good.

I still have that hum noise going on so, I jacked up the rear end as high as I could..but not High enough to get both tires off the ground (front wheels were secure from moving forward.
I was not able to get the rear differential cover off due to time restraints..but I was able to have enough room under the jeep to take these photos and move the - rear driveshaft/pinion yoke ( I no I need to replace the seal..I do have one)..and was checking for any loose preload..I didn’t feel any …so, I’m not sure if the rear diff is causing that hum I’m hearing..

I need to find out more about the parts (in the photos are good stock parts driveshaft yoke ect..I do see something on the inner side of the rear wheels and backside of the axles..it’s kinda dry little bit sticky..didn’t see any leaks on the backside..do, some opinions would be appreciated.

I’m 61 years old and still work 50-60 hour weeks..so, when my weekend do finally come..I’m limited to how much work time I can use for this jeep..my wife comes first and u spend time with her..but she don’t like to work on mechanical stuff..so, that leaves me to do it…I’m happy to do it..I’ve been wrenching since I was 12- helping my dad build race engines for our drag strip cars..for many years..I have rebuilt many engines in my time from cars, trucks, 2stroke outboards, mercruisers, atvs gosh! Too many to list.
I still enjoy wrenching..but getting a bit tired while doing it. I do not know everything about everything so, I’m not too proud to ask questions and listen to answers..always learn something new everyday even if it a new way to something different.

I’m all ears..this probably will be my last vehicle that I’m taking on trying to locate issue, wet answers to my questions and fix/repair as I go along slowly..

Anyone live near or around Pike County, GA that’s willing lend a helping hand if I need one..

Thanks!
