NP231J shift detent screw

Hi guys,
I have an ATF leak from my transfer case at the detent screw below the shift lever...slow drip, drip, drip. I plan on replacing it with a new screw...fluid needs renewed so I'll drain the case. My question is: do I need to shift the transfer case into neutral when I remove the detent screw/spring/ball assembly, or can I just leave it in 2H?

Tim, yes I recently replaced the detent screw with a new one...didn't have to remove the skid plate...this leak is difficult to detect as the screw is one of the lowest points on the NP231, but I carefully cleaned the area around and above the screw. Once I removed the screw (left the transfer case shifter in 2H) I found a tiny pinhole in the screw head...looks like the spring inside had enough pressure to erode the aluminum inside the very thin screw head. New one costs around $11 + 2 quarts of ATF+4, so an easy fix...no more leaks. That sucker was leaking about 2 ounces per day, so it wouldn't take long to totally drain the case which holds about 35 ounces. I'll have to check the tranny mount next as it got pretty soaked with fluid over the 2-week period before I detected the leak!
