NV3550 bellhousing to 4.0 engine block bolt sizes

so you got a new one of these?

Because you’re using a 2002 tub right? 03+ tubs are different.

2004 tub but assembled with mix match of parts. Originally was a 2002 yes. the boot in question was gone completely before tub swap (04 swapped on was bare bones tub. No nothing put painted metal). Will have to look closer to see what plate is on floor of tub. Am guessing its from the original 2002 thus I thinnnk it is the plate for this one. will look tomorrow.

There’s always a plate on all years. 97-02 manuals have a small circular boot bolted to the plate. 03-04 have an oddly shaped boot fastened to the plate but Mopar only sold it as all one piece and it’s been discontinued for a long time. 05-06 is a mostly plastic plate with a rubber boot molded in in the middle. That one is still sold but it’s very expensive and they die after about 10 years.

The problem between tub years is that the plate pattern was different between 97-02 and 03-06. If you’re using a 2002 tub, then you’ll want a 97-02 circle boot and a 97-02 manual trans plate. You’ll screw the 4-screw circle boot to the plate.

Back to bolts.... found this elsewhere and it sorta fits here.

"
2000 TJ with the NV3550, the bolts (to mount bracket to bottom rear of trans. Which then mounts to skid plate) are 7/16-14 and are 1-1/8" long and are threaded their full length. This is also the same bolt size used for the AX15s.

Incidentally, the nuts that mount the transmission (rubber) idolator directly to the skid plate are M8-1.25 for my 2000 TJ."

hmmmm.. something is wrong here. Mine were dirty (so I thought) so the bolts would not go in. Took a tap.... and thought I would clean one bolt hole in trans and test.... well... it threaded straight but dammn it cut out a lot of metal along the way (@ 7/16-14)... but bolts I took out from there still would not go in. a spare 7/16 - 14 did but wiggly... something is amiss.

Will go back to Tractor Supply and re-test the bolts to see if they are metric??

PS- did a search on net again but the ONLY bolt size info I could find was the quote used earlier about 7/16-14

update. I don't know. Do not think it's metric.. there is a close metric M12 1.25 (or was it 1.75.. forget which). I was stupid, should have brought home a bolt in that size to test the fit onto the transmission.

Everything I have bolt wise that came out of her, matches up with 7/16 14 based on nuts off the shelf. I do recall they were difficult to remove when I dissasembled her.... at the time I chalked that up to heavy oil leaks and dirt stuck to things .

Or maybe its just cause I cant do anything straight?? (under a tarp, in the grass, in the cold with, 12v heating gloves on due to Reynard's Syndrome)

Update #2. I would delete above to avoid confusing anyone but that is not allowed here after x time passes. Anyway..... with less frozen fingers I was able to manage cleaning the bolt holes with tap and mounting the bracket. So earlier specs are correct. 7/16 x14 course thread 1" (technically 1 1/8") full thread/no shoulder, flange hex head . Not sure the grade.

Worthless jabbering- Started on half the exhaust too. Engine/trans is out.. mounting up stuff onto it; like exhaust where it is easier to access before installing back in Jeep with cherry picker appears best plan.... especially way the exhaust brackets are laid out and welded into place on the exhaust tube... it sorta just has to get preinstalled to slip back into bracket's rubber exhaust keeper... hence why was dealing with bracket
