OEM radio doesn't work properly

I’ve discovered an issue with my new to me 2006 TJ with the in-dash CD/Radio. The radio is listed as the sales code RBK - AM/ FM STEREO RADIO WITH CD PLAYER AND CD CHANGER CONTROLS. First off when I put in a CD, it seems to recognize the disc because the display gives ERR, then quickly returns to the FM station that I was listening too. If I press the mode button, nothing happens. The unit doesn’t seem to want to play the CD. Also, the unit is supposed to have Sirius/XM capability according to the owner’s manual. In fact there is a Sirius/XM antenna on the window frame. But again, the manual says to press Mode to switch between Satellite radio and the CD player and the mode button doesn’t do a thing.

The previous owner mentioned that he had to replace the PCM to fix a heater (or defroster?) issue. Could the replacement PCM be causing the problem with the radio? Or is it just a faulty radio?

I've got the same RBK radio in my 05 LJ and the same problems with the CD player. It just goes to ERR and to FM from there with every CD I've tried. I've not noticed anything Sirius on the Jeep though, but haven't looked either. AM/FM is kind of dodgy at times too.

It's staying for the near future, but a digital media unit (USB) with bluetooth replacement is in the cards. I hate trying to talk on the phone and shift gears at the same time.

Has anyone else had this issue with their factory radio. I really don't feel like putting an aftermarket head unit in, but I sure would like to be able to use the CD player.

I haven't had any problems with mine, it does have the xm radio from the mode button. I shipped it to 1 Formula radio in FLA, where they refurbished the unit, and added an aux input. I like the stock look, so it was worth the money.

I had the same problem/code with my head unit in my 01. Not worth the trouble trying to figure it out. My gf bought me an aftermarket Rockville $30 bluetooth stereo head unit, my buddy and I installed it in 20 mins and I never looked back.

I actually took my 2001 TJ stereo apart and cleaned the laser with a q tip and acetone. You can't reach the laser with a Q tip from the front opening. The stereo actually comes apart quite easily. Be sure and remove the CD before removing stereo from vehicle.

Forgot to mention you will need thermal paste for reassembly. It is used for the large heat sink on the side of the stereo. Hope this helps someone that wants to keep their TJ stock.
