Other vehicles you've owned?

Chris, I live in the best bike riding country anywhere. Our tiny town sees thousands of riders from around the world. Unfortunately we also see many injured every summer. That said... if you want to ride the best roads in the world... come up to the Kootenays. Biking needs a special mind set, not much different that 4 wheeling along a cliff edge, or the discipline your previous vocation required. Wish everyone had that discipline.

Got my licence in 1970. For the first 15 years I owned dozens of British and German cars, Ford,VW, Opel and Leyland. Then 30 years ago I caught the off road / 4x4 bug. I have owned nothing but Land Rovers , Defenders, Series, Range Rovers and Discovery's ever since.
NOW I have my first Jeep and love it.

How do you like those Land Rovers and Range Rovers? I hear they are great off road but horribly unreliable and very costly to fix.

The older and less technical they were, the more reliable they were. The V8,s were poor in their original form as they stopped at the sight of water. Modern LR's are expensive to service and repair. Anything with more than 1 ECU is a liability off road. Their biggest problem is having strayed away from their root ethos, " A Land Rover should be repairable by any Bush mechanic in any part of the world". I am afraid they are a very long way from that now. I would think the very latest Grand Cherokees suffer from the same loss of direction.

I agree with you 100%. My thought is the same, anything with more than one ECU is a liability off road.

This is one of the reasons that the Jeep Wrangler TJ is in my opinion, the last real Jeep. It's a simple design, easy to work on, and isn't modern and complex like the newer Jeeps.

I've seen how complicated those newer Land Rovers and Range Rovers are. If anything goes bad on those things you need an entire computer system just to diagnose what's wrong. In addition parts are prohibitively expensive.

I'd apply to that to all of todays Jeeps.

I'd be happy to apply that to basically any modern day street legal vehicle. The more strict the EPA regulations become and the more advanced these vehicles get, the more difficult it becomes to service them.

I've got 3!
2004 Jeep TJ
1983 Chevrolet K20
1987 GMC Jimmy

My mom had a Land Rover(2008 I think) that thing ate cash like no tomorrow, we only have two certified mechanics to work on them that will do older ones.
She finally sold it and got a dodge nitro, which is way cheaper to get serviced out here, and most mechanics can fix the dodge.

That goes along with what I've heard about Land Rover. Horribly over priced for parts, unreliable, and when something breaks you'll pay out the ass for it!

My mom put so much money into that thing. It was ridiculous, the second you thought it was fixed you had to take it back to the mechanic for a new issue.

Yep, my sister almost bought one years ago and I told her to stay away from them since they are notorious for being unreliable and expensive.

I love with the TJ you don't ever feel the need to drive fast. It's almost like I find excuses to take back roads and go the slower route because I enjoy driving it so much.
