So i have a 2006 X with an auto. On the way to work this morning the check engine light came took it to my local parts store to have the codes checked. This is what it showed.

Gas cap loose.( not worried about this one.)
P0218 high temperature operation activated
P0714 transmission temperature sensor intermittent

Any idea whats the best way to fix these? Or are these major issues. The jeep only has 74000 on it. Thanks for any help.

The P0218 and P0714 mean your transmission is running over the temperature limit. The first thing I would do is make sure your transmission is full of fluid by checking the fluid level (see here: How to properly check the transmission fluid level on your 30RH, 32RH, or 42RLE Jeep Wrangler TJ).

If it is full, you could have a faulty sensor, or this could have been something that was accidentally triggered. I would suggest clearing this code after you check the fluid level, then seeing if the code comes back. If it doesn't come back, it's a fluke, though I would HIGHLY recommend installing a transmission cooler, as heat is the number one killer of these 42RLE transmissions (see here: How to install a Derale 20561 transmission cooler on your Wrangler TJ). A transmission cooler will reduce temperatures dramatically, and will substantially increase the life of your transmission.

Thanks Chris. I just checked the fluid its full. Is the sensor easily replaced? And the trans cooler just got moved to the top of the list. With a deeper trans pan too.

You checked the fluid while the vehicle was running though, correct?

You know, there has to be a transmission temperature sensor on the 42RLE, as the PCM (and TCM prior to 05-06) uses it for data. However, I'm not sure where it is. @Jerry Bransford, do you by chance know, or have you ever heard of it's location?

So i cleared the codes and drove it about 50 miles no more codes so far. ( knock on wood). Thanks for the help guys.

I went over a crappy raid patch job and my engine Iight came on. Jeel started to studder. Lasted about 5 secs. Now I have the P0218 code. Jeep struggles to go. Any ideas? Transmission fluid doesn't smell burnt. Radiator replaced 1 year ago.

Probably the torque converter. If it's shuddering, then it's slipping and the transmission will run hot.

I’m having the same P0218 and P0714 codes in my 2006 Rubicon. Transmission is also shifting at a slightly higher rpm than previously. Checked fluid levels, cleared codes, and it drives normally. Codes came back, and started shifting later again. I’m finding info on replacing the sensor to be pretty scarce...

I was able to use my neighbors scan tool on my Jeep today and saw this. Got me wondering if it’s a fluke or something serious. Anyone know where the temperature sensor is located?
