I recently picked up an 01 TJ 4.0. It's got a few issues to work out, but is otherwise solid with almost no rust. First thing is to get it reliable and on the road, I'll worry about upgrades as time and money allow.
It was flinging oil out of the rear diff pinion seal. Tore into it, ended up replacing both pinion bearings, one of the spider gears is ok, the rest inside is good. Backlash and pinion depth are good. All parts so far match a DANA 35.
Go to put the new pinion seal in and it doesn't fit. My diff needs a seal with a 2.75" OD, and has a 1.55" yoke. National part number 5778 is the closest at 2.795" OD with the 1.55" ID. That seems like way too much crush to fit. Picked up the old seal to measure it, and it's 2.75" OD, and a 1.8" ID.
I'm wondering if I have the wrong yoke, or if the seal is supposed to have .050" crush on the outside?
