Hey guys, looking to do a poor mans stroker build on my 02 TJ 4.0. Gonna get the Newcomer Racing 4.2 3.895" crank, some stock ratio 1.6 ratio roller rockers, clearwater replacement stock head, replace my 24lb injectors with some new ones, Fel-Pro 530SD, will be getting the rotating assembly balanced at a machine shop, see if they think I need oversized pistons(it has 140k on the motor), and wondering if I can just use my stock rods? Also what bearings should I get for the rods? Also what else needs to be changed? If anything please provide links. Thanks!

Poor man's build? Ditch the 8000 rpm capable 1000$ newcomer crankshaft and 600$ roller rockers that will wear out in less than 100k miles.

Get a stroker kit from somewhere like clegg. Use a stock cam.

If you want good stuff find russ pottenger and have him spec a build for you

There are no short cuts to quality. You are talking about an expensive build. The stroker works great. But take it from an old codger. If it runs and idles good. Leave it alone.

It doesn’t run and idle good, that’s why I’m just going through all of it

Probably and you probably could do some rudimentary porting of your head with a carbide bit.

Might want to have the machine shop replace the cam bearings. Unless you want to buy the tool.

I'd also add in $400 and buy a used 4.0 off CL or FB. Either swap it in while I was doing the work or build it as a stoker.

stroker is much more complex to do than it seems, in italy we struggle to find professionals capable to put all the pieces together, and to have the experience to understand if everything works properly or not.
these kits seems amazing, any reco on the quality? is there anything better than this?

You could also consider a Vortec 4200 swap. Inline 6, cross-flow head, 291hp & 275ft/lb torque stock, mates up to just about any transmission.

Do those have a small block pattern?

No, they're unique, but the pattern is well documented and adapter plates exist to convert it to the SBC pattern. Or because the 4/5cyl Atlas motors were available with an AR5 transmission, the bellhousing from those will bolt onto an AX15/NV3550 with minimal modification. You will need a custom flywheel (which is remarkably affordable for a low-volume aftermarket piece) because the 6cyl has a completely unique bolt pattern on the crank. If you want to go with an automatic, easy option is stick with the 4L60, but there are options to put the 6L80, and development is ongoing for using the ZF 8HP70.

Looks like close to 500hp with less than 10psi boost as well
