Looks like a non-poisonous Pacific Gopher Snake

View attachment 555450

Yes, looks like a gopher/rat snake. Good to have around. I would catch these and release them on my hillside at my previous house. Found one stranded on my floating pool chlorinator once.

A poisonous snake will usually have a broader head. If you're close enough, you can see the pits near the eyes.

Spotted two gopher snakes likely mating a few months ago while walking my dog:

Didn't realize it was two snakes until looking at the picture later.

Sometimes on my morning walks with Buster dog, we'll come across the remains of a critter that met a violent death at the jaws of one or more coyotes.

This was the first time that we'd come across a small coyote that met its maker at the jaws of its kin.

Didn't know they would eat their own. Guess if they get hungry enough.

Reminds me of when I used to work at a hardware store (Builder's Emporium). We had a rat problem and put out glue traps. One morning found one in the lumber dept that was just the feet and part of the head, and a bloody mess surrounding it.

Coyotes seem to be the top predator in this area, unless we have a lone Bobcat running around. I went out there yesterday and the carcass was gone but there were clumps of fur all over.

All animals that can, will. Including people. It was the norm when ancient cities were under siege.

Pirkei Avot 3:2, Rabbi Chanina teaches: “Pray for the welfare of the government, for were it not for the fear it inspires, every man would swallow his neighbor alive.”

Plenty around here too. I think they're one of the only predators. At least they don't bother me when I walk my dog. Saw a pretty big one walking the opposite direction across the street. Strangely looked friendly and happy. Yet people still let their cats go outside. Plenty of 'missing cat' flyers. Your cat isn't coming back...

Hear them killing things all the time at night. I have 3 dogs. 2 are medium sized, one small (Yorkie). The Yorkie does not go outside at night usually, pees in the house. Drives me nuts. Wife promises this will be her last little dog.

We usually know when they've made a kill in the evening. Happy party time. Our dog is about 65 lbs so I'm not too worried about him but he doesn't go about unleashed. Lots of flyers here, too, for missing cats and small dogs.

While making coffee at 5something am, I look down at the cats water dish.

I had to blink a few times to clear my eyes and get my youngest as a witness. But there was a neon Tetra in the cats water.

There is a fish tank several feet away but I am puzzled with the whole A to B thing

I rescued it and threw it back in the tank.

One of those mysteries of life... ;)

Despite the cesspool the city has turned into, the Chicago lakefront is still one of my favorite places to ride and where I have probably logged the most miles. Was back visiting family this weekend and got in a nice 30mi with my brother before it got crowded.
