I have a '05 Wrangler Sport as a backup vehicle to my daily driver. My dd is a spice rocket which isn't good for inclement weather so I tend to keep an old jeep as a backup vehicle (something that if I wrecked in a ditch I wouldn't lose any sleep over and would just look to buy another cheap used one).

That being said I'm attempting to show it a little bit of love; first i finally broke down and replaced the bad motor blower resistor, which is quite a pain in the ass but had been driving me crazy lol. Then i decided I was tired of the really old aftermarket head unit which really needs to be replaced, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to replace all the speakers and maybe the sub. This one did come with the center console sub but i have never heard it on, so I have no idea if it was ever hooked up correctly or if something happened to it over time (and after pulling it out it looks like an aftermarket panasonic one).

The first thing I did was order the Polk Audio DB462 4x6 speakers to replace the front dash speakers- and I found out they won't work without an adapter as the screw holes are in different locations. I'm sending them back and replacing them with DB522s and the dash-pods I saw recommended everywhere.

I kept seeing that 6.5" speakers would work in the roll bar pods as a drop-in replacement, so I ordered the DB652s and it turns out that 6.5s require you to drill new holes (since when did "drop-in replacement" include having to modify the structure?) From what I've seen, it doesn't look like it's too much work to slap down some self-tapping screws where the new mounting spots are, but I can't take the pods off the roll bar (don't you have to take the top off to access the mounting bolts?) and i don't want to try to jerry-rig it while upside down in the back. I'll probably send them back as well and get another pair of 522s instead.

I also ended up getting a Kicker 48CWRT47 CompRT 6.75" under the impression that it was a drop-in replacement for the oem, and like with the speaker pods it is not. I may entertain just saying fuck it and screwing it down with self-tappers anyway, since i actually have the sub box all pulled apart in my living room. I'm also considering sending it back and throwing in the Sound Ordnance B-8PTD since it has an amp and supposedly fits in the center console, though I'm reading conflicting reports about having to modify the center console tray. I'm really not trying to modify anything. Also, I know it's not ideal to push a nice sub without an amp- i'm really not trying to invest too much into this, plus I'm not trying to drill through the firewall and all that to run the power line or whatever to the battery.

Oh the deck is a Kenmore KDC-X305 Excelon. I got a red wolf wiring harness as I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm honestly a bit nervous about any wiring I'll have to do, and what I'll discover the previous owner did (for reference they literally ripped off those red locking tabs from those molex connectors like the one where the motor blower resistor is, and the power connector under the center console.. and used janky electrical tape instead of connectors, etc etc).

Sorry for the long post. All things aside, I've always enjoyed the Jeeps i've had. My parents used to have a CJ back in the day until I was born lol then they had a '94 limited edition grand cherokee which they eventually handed down to me.

If you bought it at Crutchfield, everything you need for a clean installation is included. My 6.5" speakers fit great and nothing except the old speakers have to be removed. Self tapping screws work well.

thanks for the replies. i'd scrolled through some of that long topic, the issue i have is that one post will say 'this sub drops right in' and then another post will say they had to modify this or that to make it fit, and the conflicting information is driving me nuts. about the sub, i'm probably gonna send this kicker back and put in one that actually drops in. is the stock sub size 6" or 6.5"? I think i saw a video of someone dropping in a 6.5" pyle into their sub box; i think i'm just gonna do that too.

edit- i didn't have a lot of time yesterday when i pulled it apart to really look at it and mess with it, but the previous owner had dropped in an aftermarket 6" panasonic sub. it's real shallow- like barely 2", so it drops in without needing to cut the ribs out, and he just screwed his own holes into the mounting surface. i went ahead and went at the ribs with my snips and i think i can do the same with the kicker sub. in the video posted about, the guy installing the same sub cut out a section out of the back of the center console, but i've seen other videos where they only mentioned needing to cut the ribs out; i don't have my sawzall so i didn't want to have to do that, but like i said it doesn't seem like there's an interference there. i ordered some poly-fil for the box (is that stuff flammable?) so i'll wait for that to get here before putting the sub/console back in. my head unit is supposed to come today.

i do like the way the 6.5s sit on the face of the speaker pods- the issue i have is that i can't take mine off, so i can't comfortably do what i need to make them work. my jeep came with the back seats already removed, and there's this big plastic tray/box full of tools and shit taking up most of the space in the back. it's hard to explain without seeing it, but i won't be able to hold a speaker with one hand, get it perfectly centered/oriented, and drill new holes in place while upside down in this awkward space. i was trying to see if any of the generic 5.25" -> 6.5" brackets would work but most of them are advertised for harley gliders and stuff and i have no idea if they'll work or look weird or not. i'm gonna just send em these 652s back and put another pair of 522s there. i'm really not trying to overly complicate this.

Was there a question in there?

sorry i do actually have a question, which i anticipated would crop up when it came time for wiring.

i've yanked out the old head unit (fortunately the previous owner bought an adapter instead of cutting out the factory harness) and i'm getting ready to wire up the new red wolf adapter i got to the harness that came with the new head unit. the red wolf adapter has 2 yellow and 2 black plugs. are these so you can run a power/ground line out to an amp or something? do i need to tie both together to the yellow/black wire of the radio harness? or can i just pick one and leave the other "spare" covered so it doesn't short?

sorry if this is a dumb question, i was always afraid to do this back in the day lol

edit- i went ahead and posted this in that one long running stereo upgrade thread since it's still pretty active

sorry for being so neurotic, i went ahead and got the new deck in. i haven't configured it yet as i still don't have the speakers i'm waiting on, but so far it works great. it's a great unit.

somewhat related, that piece of trim on the top of the dash that covers up the 2 screws for the center console trim; the part of that trim that is a thin grill that sits over the windshield A/C vents is broken. what's the easiest, cheapest way of properly replacing it?

Personally I'd remove the plastic grill and replace it with black window screen or something else that won't let debris pass through.

about the sub, i'm waiting for the polyfil for the box, but in the meantime, how do i wire up the red/black/brown/grey wires to the sub? red (+) / black (-) on one side, and brown (+) / grey (-) on the other?

bump so i can get an answer on this. i've seen posts saying to wire it up red -> positive / black -> negative on one side and brown -> positive / grey -> negative on the other, but ive also seen posts saying to wire it up the other way: red -> negative / black -> positive and brown -> negative / grey -> positive.

this is keeping me from putting my console back together and back in the jeep. i don't want to take a guess and then have to take it all back out because it needed to be wired the other way.

Sounds like it's time to break out the FSM and be sure

i don't know what that is, but if it's one of the manuals, i have copies of all of them (service manual, chasis manual, etc) and all the wiring diagrams i saw looked like they were diagrams of the wiring to that 12 pin molex connector; i never saw any diagrams pointing to those 4 specific wires

edit: i finally found what i needed and got it wired up and put in the box; instead of installing it back in the center console i took it out and plugged it in to see if it works; no dice.

i don't think there's an issue with the speaker wiring i did, or the radio harness wiring; the PO had replaced the factory sub with a pioneer speaker which has never worked the entire time i've had it; i assumed he hooked it up wrong but now i'm wondering if he blew the amp or something

what is the next troubleshooting step?

so about my sub apparently getting no power, i'm thinking maybe the amp is blown? what do i need to test that- a multimeter? i actually have one even though i basically have no idea how to use it.

i apologize for being so neurotic about the electrical stuff; i've dabbled with plumbing and other stuff but i never stepped into the electrician world.
