Road Noise: Hard Upper Half Doors vs Full Doors

Try the full soft doors....

I'm running the hard top right now after 2 years of it sitting only because I had to move it from where it was being stored. I kind of forgot how good the lj's look with the hard tops.

It is also substantially quieter than my old oem soft top. Running hard doors with ac it's almost a regular suv!

Wife agrees its much quieter and kids like the giant windows.

That's what has me researching whether I'd be ok with Bulldawg half door uppers or if I should just bite the bullet and find some full doors. Thanks for all the good input in this thread.

Brother?!!!

You want full doors. I want half doors. We could meet somewhere on I-10 between El Paso and San Antonio. Straight swap with your half doors with uppers, for my full doors. PM me. We could talk out the details.

I just bought a Rugged Radio intercom. Works with my Midland radio. Plays music. Maybe my tinnitus won't get worse.

Dude. The Drag-N-Drive guys have migrated to Rugged intercoms.

Your pic here makes me think you and a co-driver are going to run the Rocky Mountain Race Week 1.0 soon.

I really like my intercom system. Changes wheeling with a passenger as it’s so easy to communicate.

Plus a quick push of the push to talk sends your communication through the GMRS.

May have to get one of those Cleetus wheels and put the PTT button on it.

Me and my dad are driving 6 hours north to Vancouver Island in a convoy in July...so probably 65 to 75 mph up I-5. Topless.

Then we're taking the Washington BDR south after driving across BC.

Rugged intercoms will make this trip pleasant and fun.

I've run ultras...I've trail run in front of mule teams clearing 23 miles of trail with crosscut saws in a day. Past 55 mph in my Jeep all day in the sun makes me exhausted beyond belief. This will make the trip much more enjoyable.

You can argue half doors and uppers and full doors...or just wear ear pro...

If I spend any more money on making my Jeep quieter it'll involve two Netgain 120 motors, some batteries and a controller.

I try to limit my speed to around 45 when the top and doors are off for months at a time. It feels like a real jeep that way and i don't save much time on hour long trips at 55-65.faster than 45 gets way louder no matter what you run

I put a lot of miles on the Jeep when we were renting in town because everything was minutes away at sub-45mph. Now it's 5 miles of rural stuff where the speed limit is 45 but people want to go 60, and then either another few miles of that or hop into a 75mph interstate...it hasn't even seen 1000 miles this year.

One variable that hasn’t been mentioned is the tire you’re running. An aggressive MT is going to be way louder than a smoother AT.

My YJ came with nearly-new 33x12.5x15 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, but the rig wasn’t really built for 33’s. I changed to a mild 30x9.5 Yokohama AT and the road noise improved dramatically. Not to mention the improved handling.

If a 10.5” AT will suffice for your off-road needs, it will help your ears on-road.

lol - no, I want full doors and I still want my half doors; first world problems. I use my half doors on the trail, so I don't want to get rid of them. I was hoping the Bulldawgs might give the best of both worlds, but since the sliding window on them is so small, I don't think they will.

Nice TJ btw

I'm 10 miles from a small town. I just leave a few minutes early and pull over often.its nice having my commute turned relaxing rather than stressful when the jeep goes into summer mode.

I had a grandpa who did circle track racing and had a few different fast hotrods.but he still drove the limit on the highway and was never far behind the azzholes who pass on blind corners to save 45 seconds.

I miss that wise ol man

This, 100%. I used to drive as fast as I thought I could get away with, weaving in traffic, etc. As I've gotten older, I've slowed down and it makes me SO much more relaxed. My wife's family is a 500 mile drive and I can push it at 10-10ths and get there in 7 hours and 45 minutes...or I can slow down to 8-10ths and get there in 8.5 hours. That 45 minutes of time savings isn't worth the stress of being on edge for that long. Honestly, packing a sandwich vs stopping for lunch and making sure to limit the potty breaks will save WAY more time than the difference in speed will.

I thought about buying hard uppers at one point but then found some matching hard doors on the FB's for about the same price I would have bought hard uppers for so that made the decision easier. I really like how much quieter they are than my soft uppers. I do run my half doors in the summer and when i have the uppers off, I run some cheap ear plugs that do the job. But there is just something about half doors without uppers that just makes the Tj look super bad A.
