So, i thought id give an update on the 1997 TJ fault i encountered on my brothers 1997 TJ.
The car is a european spec left hand drive German TJ. From what i can find, the cars where manufactured with no security system in US.
When they reached Europe, law dictated that they required a suitable security system and the Rockwell immobiliser was added prior to sale by Chrysler.
The system is disarmed by the use of a small remote fob seperate from the key and the vehicle key does not have a transponder in it as used in US vehicles.
I also know that this system differs from UK spec as they use a system supplied by May & Scofield.
Anyways, the symptoms of this fault were that it became increasingly difficult to get the car to disarm via the remote. Batteries were changed in it and this made no difference.
Eventually, the system refused to disarm and thus the vehicle would start briefly, then die out. All the electrical gauges in the dash worked when ignition was on, ie, voltage, ignition light etc.
Via this forum, i discovered Wranglerfix and after a short telephone call to Mark, the ECU or as they call it in US, a PCM was shipped off to him for repair.
When i received the updated ECU, prior to refittment, i unplugged the Rockwell control box which is located behind the dashboard and accessed by removal of the plastic panel below the steering column.
The ECU was then reconnected and the car now starts as it should. Ive attached a picture of the culprit.
I cant thank Mark enough for his help and the swiftness of the service.

Interesting they sourced a US made Rockwell part for the immobilizer vs a German sourced part.

Where is the Rockwell unit pictured above located? I have searched everywhere near the ignition with no luck. I have a '97 TJ Euro spec. Since earlier in the week stopped responding to both the immobilizer remotes.

Have you pulled the knee bolster and looked behind it? That module looks too big to be anywhere in the column trim.

Thanks - yep - knee bolster off as well. Plus looked behind glove box on the other side as well. Still don't spot it.

Managed to find the Rockwell part. It was much higher up - in the corner behind the instrument binnacle. Still double beeps as it always has when the ignition is powered on. Just doesn't seem to receive the signal from either of the remotes (I put new batteries in both to be sure). So strange failure state. I am also not sure what the repairs above refer to. Is the Rockwell unit somehow flashed so it sends a valid unlock message to the ECU without needing the remote? Or does one put in an entirely new ECU that doesn't expect to receive communications from the Rockwell unit at all.

Update - spoke to Mark mentioned above. So the Rockwell part doesn't see to have any part in the solution - it seems one could just as well leave it in. It is the engine ECU one gets him to update or replace.
