I put trail tail lights on my jeep a few years ago as a consolation prize to the mostly unobtainable black Savvy tail lights - and just never really felt like they quite fit. Over the years I have considered buying used (usually missing them) or considering others. However, I never really liked any other housing as much as the mostly OEM feeling Savvy.
Fast forward a bit - Blaine put together a great taillight that is the brightest and cleanest I have seen to date (including phenomenal reverse lights), however my mind has still been on something close to that Savvy shape (it makes me think of a clean and low profile version of an OEM tail light). He was generous enough to let me buy some of the components a-la-carte to play with and didn't mind that I had a different style in mind.
Another year or so later, I finally have the bandwidth and growing CAD skill to play with some designs - so that project starts today. My intent is to 3d print low profile housings using Blaine's awesome lenses. For now, I am not including the markers into any design plans yet - only so I can focus on getting the correct shape for the lens, screw holes, tub mount, and cable access. Once I figure that out, I will adjust the design to work in some type of marker lights. Initial prints will be in PLA since it's cheap to test with (something like $2 a print or less as I print single features instead of full housings) working up to ASA which will roughly cost me about $4.25 a side.
Most people likely don't care what color wire does what, since Blaine includes a pigtail that works and you just match them up - but in case you get curious like me:
- White -> Ground
- Black -> Running/Parking Lights
- Red -> Brake light (bright)
- Yellow -> Reverse
They draw from about 0.09A to 0.22A, just as a reference. There's plenty of pictures around of their brightness, and it's easier to picture on a jeep outside. But right now I just have the bench power supply, so it's bench shots and my potato changing exposure...
