Anyone running lifts and 33s on a 4cyl? Got my TJ fairly stock and wanna beef it up a bit... any advice or recommendations? I’m trynna find the equilibrium of having it look beefy but I still be able to hit 60 on the highway.

Very possible BUT you will need to re-gear to get back your lost power. Then doable 35's not so much

Your stock rear Dana 35 axle wouldn't survive 35's for long and you wouldn't be able to regear your axles to a ratio that would allow your 2.5L engine to perform well enough with that big of a tire.

I'd stick with 33's and regear your axles to 4.88 which is a popular ratio for 33's with the 2.5L engine and 5-speed transmission. 4.56 would only be a suitable ratio for the 4.0L engine.

Good luck with that.

31's render 5th gear virtually useless unless going downhill. Perhaps in flat Florida it "might" get into 5th. MIGHT

33's would zap the power from that 4 cylinder. Rrally bad like.

60mph is asking a lot.

Having said the above 4.88 or 5.13 would be my recommendation given you live in Ohio.
5.13 would allow you to get into a 35 at some point and while not a racer would drive similar to a stock 4 cylinder with stock 29" tires.

Good luck

A Jeep can look beefy on 31s or 32s easily. And still be driveable. As you go to a bigger tire the 'driveable' part gets harder and harder. Owning a 4 banger means certain limits are placed on you. Deciding whether it's the looks or the performance that is more important to you will be key in getting the right add-ons for your TJ.

I can second the motion that 33's on stock gearing is going to make you hate life on anything but a very level surface. Almost as soon as I got my 4 banger I upgraded to the super 35 kit and 5.13's. There are definitely places offroad that I would like to have even lower gearing but it does pretty good.

I had a TJ with the 2.5 & 5 speed trans with 33" tires on it.

I had regeared it to 4.88 and ran a Detroit locker in the rear and LocRite in the front. As Jerry said unless you are going to get a Super35 kit for your rear axle it's not going to like 35" tires PLUS your 4 popper isn't going to like you or the bigger tires much at all.

Go to Grimm Rear Gear calculator to see what the different gear ratios will look like.

With 4.88 gears you could use 5th gear again some of the time. If they'd offered 5.13 gears back when I did my gear swap I would have seriously looked at them over the 4.88 gears.

And once you are off-road you'll have a great time with the lower gear ratio.

Even once you regear think really really hard about going any larger than 33" tires. Before I did my engine swap I decided to install 35" tires and I was back to not being able to use 5th gear again. 33" tires will amaze you.

2.5L, ax-5, Dana 44’s front and rear , 5.38’s in the axles , 37 inch pitbulls. Can go 65 on everything but long hills. Not a rocket ship but doable. Been 2.5 years now, no issues

33’s now. I was told it’s lifted 6 inches.
It’s in the shop now getting a new clutch.

I need to be able to drive it up into the mountains and I’m not sure I can the way it’s set up.

The white TJ in post #8 is mine and I had stock 4.10 gears and 33" tires and drove over Snoqualmie Pass all the time. Yes it was a LOT better with 4.88 gears but it's doable with stock gears. I had a 4" lift & 33" tires.

This is 4" suspension & 1.25" body lift with 35" tire.

If you've got a 6" and 33" tires it's got to look way off.
