OK, So in an effort to shave MORE weight I decided to ditch my full doors and go half doors. I even lucked up and found BLACK half doors with SPICE interior

halfdoors1.jpg

Turns out, Spice interior is close to the "camel" of a sahara, but no cigar. So I wanted to paint the interior panels to match my Sahara camel/green interior.

Trouble is...how do I get that color?

A Google search pointed me to various past posts on the old forums. So taking that advice I ordered "CAMEL" interior paint

SEM_Logo.jpg

Color Coat - Plastic & Vinyl Flexible Coating, Camel, 12 oz. Aerosol
Item #: SEM 15173

With Proper prep, and sufficient temps to paint I applied the paint (sorry...forgot to take pics of THAT color) But trust me....way too orange. It's like Trumps make-up artist was turned loose on my door panels!!!

OK so More research......

Touchupdirect:

Jeep Touch Up Paint - Medium Fawn (Interior Color) T5/XT5
Size: Aerosol
Package: Essential

Well dang, this is light sand, and now my dash looks more orange.

(Insert pic here tonight or tomorrow when I get the Jeep out in the sun and you see how horrible this looks)

Does anyone know a source for aerosol dash/door paint that MATCHES the 2002 Sahara tan/camel better than these 2 products?

If you want to really save weight then go full soft doors. I can lift a door out of the back of my jeep with one arm. They are super light.

Am I supposed to be seeing more than just the first picture?

Oh man, I wish you luck on that one. I think your best bet (as much as I hate to say it), would be to go to a paint store that has tons of spray paint in stock. I'd buy a bunch of them and test them out to see which one matches best. It may end up costing more than you want, but it may be one of the only options.

If you do this, post some photos, I want to see the end result.

Seems like maybe your original post was missing some photos?

OK, so I decided to contact SEM....

If you look at their site it says:

So wheels got to turning....and I sent them an email

Good morning,

Thanks for contacting us about our products. A local store that has a COLOR COAT mix system can produce the color. Since we have formulas for Chrysler products from 2002, if you can tell me what name Jeep calls that color I can give you the formula number that a local store can mix- if they have a COLOR COAT mix system. Let me know where you are located and we can get your local sales rep help you find a place that mixes.

Thanks again

I provided my VIN and trim code and lo and behold.......

The formula for the Med. Camel is 5020 and is not one we manufacture in aerosol so it too will have to be mixed.

Thanks

I placed a call to the local rep (he gave me his number in another email) and he's mixing me 2 cans in aerosol and having them shipped to a store here in my city to pick up tomorrow. It'll be a little more than what you can buy the can straight from them for, but damn worth it if it matches!!!!

So for suture reference, if you're TRIM code is M5KG your interior tan code is Med. Camel 5020 from SEM and they can make it for you locally in aerosol form!

Pics of how this plays out will follow

Having just finished a wheeling trip last weekend and running my full soft doors, I don't think I'd like to run them full time. However, factory half doors with soft uppers and glass sliders might not be a bad option. That SEM color coat can be really thin, so multiple light coats will be your friend.

What makes you not want to run them full time? I'm am curious.

I have been running full softies for years. There are a few downsides but the ease of taking them off and tossing em in the back out weighs em. That's just my opinion.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Yes, they are light, easy to put on/take off, and you can even stow them in back while on the trail, but for me, they are noisy, don't seal as well as hard doors, visibility is not as good as the plastic gets scratched over time, and since my jeep is also my commuter car, you can't lock the doors. Other than that, they are great. I use them on occasion, but am glad I have my full doors. I'm "that guy" that puts the hard top on for the winter months, but it's nice to have options.

"Full soft mode"!

I agree with everything you said except the noise part because I am deaf! :applaudit:

I don't keep anything in the jeep worth stealing so I'm good without locks.

Wow, now that is good customer service on SEMs behalf. Awesome news, and thanks for posting the info. You never know who might find it useful in the future.

I thought so too!!!

Hopefully if someone now searches for "Sahara interior color code" they can have a real answer!!

I changed the title to the thread to make it more descriptive. That will probably help!

SEM makes nice stuff. I re-painted my hard top from grey to back, using SEM trim black paint.

I know several professional painters who all say that SEM is as close to professional quality paint that you can get in a can. I believe them too!

Looks like I have my answer. I’ve been looking for proper paint to touch up and low & behold the information was on the OG forum. Thanks for your contribution @CasterTroy !

Thanks for this thread CasterTroy! Lookin to paint my interior parts with the Camel color too.
Do you have photos now of the painted door panels with the mixed SEM spray paint?

Have bringing back such an old thread but, I called up Chrysler / Jeep to ask about the trim code M5TJ and was told the name is "Saddle" and "Classic Black" for an 98 Sahara. Emailed SEM and they told they don't have anything by either of those names, just "Black" (Color Coat 15013) and "Saddle Tan" (4976). Curious if anyone else knows the official names for the interior of the Sahara, or how close that "Med. Camel" (5020) matches?

I would try, "Med. Camel," since SEM claimed it matches on @CasterTroy Sahara interior. Even though he wanted this to be the end all be all of the Sahara interior paint thread, he has yet to follow up with how well it did or didnt match the factory interior.

You could help us out with following through on this @Camhabib

You could also try multiple shades as @Chris suggested in an earlier post in this thread.

Will do. I reached out to the SEM rep and I'm going to order a couple cans of the Med. Camel and see how it looks. I'm hoping OP got the color right and just put the struggles behind him and forgot to update the post. I'll report back either way though.
