I'm not sure why you have to retort to something that I already mentioned was for "in a pinch". I don't think anybody was suggesting it for daily use...

We used our backpacks for crevasse rescue. Heres the hole a buddy feel into. Wrap a backpack with the rope, bury it in the snow. Now the leader is free to guide the rescue. A tire buried deep enough works fine.

Heres the hole. Bring back memories from 35 years ago.. He only dropped 5' but it took an hour to get him out.
