2012 JK sport 2dr (Sorry, I know this is TJ forum but I have been asking about these rusty TJ rigs) 58k miles asking $14k...is it so that I'm seeing mostly surface rust and rust on the skid plate? Funny thing, the seller "taught" me to use black spray paint to get rid unsightly surface rust. Therefore, I suspect there is some rust on the frame but seems nothing serious. Manual with 3.73...not much other options. Deal or no deal?

This 2003 ruby has 131k miles and asking 13k. Seems the frame is ok but some stranger place has rust. Is the driver floor considered rusty or just scratched up?

I’d pass. You can get 2012 rubicons from a southern state for 16-18k right now with the new JL out. If you go the JK route stick with 2012 and up for sure. Don’t get 2011 and down. You will hate the 3.8 engine.

JKs are a dime a dozen, and still new enough that you can get them with no rust at all. I would pass on any JK if it had rust on it personally.

That 2003 Rubi looks pretty damn clean, actually. The floor board rust looks to be surface, from condensation trapped between the carpet and the heat shielding. Can be wire, cleaned and painted. Easy.

If you really want a TJ, I’d consider that Rubicon. But Im curious, do you have a garage up there in Canada? I personally believe all TJ’s are rust prone and in snowy climate states, no garage is a quicker death for TJ’s than other Jeeps.

Well, I can put it in a garage but here is my dilemma.

I have a family of 4 and should really consider an unlimited JK because my kids are getting older. I'd like to carry bikes and skis. Plus in the long term, I do want to outfit like a overlander vehicle to go camping in. On the other hand, this is going to be an 2nd vehicle so I don't really want to spend too much to begin with. 2012 or newer with the new engine would be ideal but I can find anything cheaper than 21k even for an unlimited sport. Most have over 60k miles.

On the other end, I can get an inexpensive TJ just as a weekend toy for now. It can take 4 people but not a lot of gear. However, the more I learn, the more picky I have become with all the rusty rigs out there. The current Rubicon TJ is cleaner but for what the seller is asking, I can get much this other much newer 2dr JK, which arguably is roomier for the family, with more powerful engine and fewer miles. Plus to keep value of the Rubicon up, I should be more careful with it in the trails which sort of defeat the purpose of getting a jeep.

Third option is to wait for the prices of the unlimited to come down a bit more since winter is coming.

Thoughts?

I prefer the 4.0 TJ engine over the 3.6 JKU.

The Rubi is cleaner than the JK.

The Rubi will hold its value better than the JK.

If you have to have the interior room, save up and wait for a JKU. Otherwise, get a cargo carrier or trailer and get the Rubi.

I think I defied the odds for 7 years. I left my rigs outside my garage during winter times when I was still living in Chicago. They turned out okay but I regularly power wash the underbelly though.

All that paint bubbling up on those Rubi tailgate hinges is rust. If its there, its lots of other places too. What are the inside of the frame rails like? You can tell a good bit by how they feel as well.
