Apparently this is a grill but I thought that's what the front of a radiator is. It looks like it's been painted over in the past too. These pictures are with my radiator taken out. I'm guessing it's supposed to be extra protection. Is it necessary though? The problem is it takes up space and makes it really difficult to work under the hood when that, the radiator, and fan are in. I really had to work at it to remove the radiator and it definitely didn't just pull up easily like in a lot of tutorials. And more importantly, if it's keeping my radiator from cooling properly that would explain why it has had overheating problems, especially with the ac on.

What is probably keeping your radiator from cooling properly is the dirt buildup on the back side and inside of the condenser cooling fins .
IF the radiator is still removed; I would rinse thru the condenser cooling fins from the back and then from the front to clear the buildup.
Once the condenser cooling fins appear clean; shine a bright light thru the condenser to see if there are any areas that require more cleaning.
The obstruction of air flow thru the condenser decreases the air flow that reaches the radiators cooling fins causing the engine to run hotter.

Yeah, you don't need that... just rip it out. Engine will run cooler without it... you, not so much...

It's not a grill, but a heat exchanger for your AC... and it is seriously plugged up with mud and f**k knows what else. Clean it out, and if your radiator looks even close to this, then clean it out as well.

And replace those hose clamps with constant tension clamps...

I feel like an idiot but I'm glad I asked because that's how you learn 😄. I will definitely not be removing it. Thanks for the help, everyone!
