Good evening, I would to ask you guys for an opinion. My oil pan or maybe rear seal were leaking. I decided to replace the oil pan gasket and the rear main seal on my 05 the Rubicon with 105k miles. When I dropped the oil pan to clean and wash it I found a gunk of burned looking oil in this sticky gunk there were a bunch of semi metal black looking shards. I'm attaching pictures. I would like you opinion as to what you guys think it is. My engine runs fine and I can't hear any knock although when I finish putting it together I going to really put my ears to it. The shards are weakly pickup by a magnet and I can break them into smaller pieces with my fingers. Can you guys give me some input? My mechanic said to not worry about it unless the engine is running like **** or burning a lot of oil. I bought the Jeep last year and I'm still making payments on it. It's my weekend driver who ever owned before went mudding with it because I see mud under the engine. Anyways I hope you guys can give me some good feedback back. I don't think it's the rod bearing. Since the material is black and looks rough and porous. At first I thought that since the oil pan was loose that maybe little rocks went in but I'm not sure.

I agree...no shiny bits that I see. If you crush one in your fingers do you see any metallic (like metallic paint) bits? KC's magnet idea sounds good too.
