Setrab transmission oil cooler 53-10748 reference pictures to aid some installs

@mrblaine - super helpful photos. Got mine mounted up in my shitbox LJR.

Only question is what is the Mr. Blaine approved routing near the steering box? I figure we want to stay good distance from the steering shaft, and go over the lower radiator hose. Do you have any photos of this area with the box in place?

No pics, we just make it work.

@mrblaine - thanks, do you use any zip ties or rubber clamps in that area, or just loose from grill to trans line?

We just make it work. Sometimes it takes a few clamps, sometimes routing it a certain way makes it all play nice. That and I'd done this enough times that no matter what I say has to be done to work, some folks will jump through their ass to do it any way but that.

Excellent write up. I'm about to order a Setrab 53-10748 for my 2004 LJ. This thread is super helpful. I will reach out to @mrblaine via email to order up the extra bits needed to make this work. THANK YOU!

Let me know what you consider to be "extra bits" please. Are you ever going to run a steering cooler? If so, that determines where the trans cooler mounts so your mechanic would benefit from that knowledge. I did see your email and called, no answer so I sent a number to call me on.

@mrblaine I appreciate your speedy response and apologies for missing the call. Some days work just keeps getting in my way! I left you a VM this afternoon.

It’s a good point about the steering cooler. I do not plan to run a steering cooler. Matt and Brandon (my mechanics) know this.

In reading the tread (and I could certainly be misunderstanding it), there is an adapter that you craft for the 03-04. My LJ is an 04, automatic transmission.

— Snip from earlier in this thread —
“The only adapter I have found for the cooler port in the radiator is the one made by ICT Billet for the 05-06 quick disconnect style.

I have yet to find anything good to adapt the 03-04 so we custom make them.”
— End Snip —

Anyway, the “extra bits” refer to the adapter you custom build and any other parts that benefit from Black Magic. I’m honestly not sure if there are any other pieces that are not found off the shelf. Is there a Black Magic kit that closes the gap between the transmission and the Setrab? Is it just as simple as ordering up two ICT Billet 05-06 quick disconnect style adapters?

I just want to make it go as smoothly as possible for the team.

Thanks,
Kim

You'll only need one adaptor from ICT billet if you have the quick disconnects on the radiator. This is available from summit racing, etc.

The only custom piece you'll "need" from @mrblaine is the stainless tube for the passenger side of the setrab.

He supplied me with the AN fittings, but ended up needing one 45 hose barb fitting to connect to the stainless tube. These AN fittings are all easily available from racetronix etc. But probably easiest to get them from blaine. You'll also need -6 hose. I got aeroquip from summit, but I think Blaine can supply that as well.

My experience is pushing the hoses onto the barbed fittings is pretty tough, but I'm also an idiot. I think you can buy a fancy tool to do this.

The ICT adapter doesn't work on the 03-04 trans cooler ports in the radiator. Best thing to do there is carefully remove the rubber hose from the port you are going to use and push the new hose onto it.

I don't like the aluminum ICT adapters so I had a 100 of them made in stainless.

@mrblaine - what's the issue with the aluminum? Can I get one of your stainless ones or are they special?
I haven't had any issues with them, I just prefer stainless in this application. They are not special, that's why I had so many made. Yes you can get one, they are about the same price as the ICT part shipped.

Thanks,

Those are not the quick disconnects, but are hose barb ends The ict adapter will not be helpful.

I believe you could convert one of the ports to quick disconnect, as it's just a treaded fitting, and then use the ICT piece or equivalent. I converted the ports on mine as the 05-06 radiator was not available.

But I will butt out now so @mrblaine can tell you the right thing to do.

Here’s pictures of the bottom of my radiator.

Those are threaded fittings that screw into the heat exchanger and have a small tube that sticks a small amount further into the fitting that then seals on the o-ring inside the heat exhanger fitting. All you do there is remove the hoses and use new hose either 3/8" or -6 onto them with clamps. If they can salvage and reuse the one with the formed 90 on it, all the better. Otherwise, we have to convert to -6 male by brazing that onto the part that threads into the heat exchanger so a 90 degree fitting can be used. For that, we need those fittings out of the radiator and that is a pain in the ass. We have never found anything that fits in the aftermarket since it is such an oddball.
