Shock advice

You pressing on the shock is nothing compared to how much weight the Jeep exerts on the shock. It really doesn't mean anything. You could be weak. Even if you were strong it wouldn't mean anything as far as ride quality. JJ is running outboard tuned shocks, so you aren't going to be able to approach the ride quality he has under his current iteration without a few years of work. If you want to drive the Jeep soon, then give up on that pipe dream, get a cheap shock, smaller wheels, and set your tire pressure right.

Nah bro. This was the douchy reply. I came here because the wealth of knowledge I’ve seen here is astounding and I value the opinions I see. Being a jerk on the internet to a guy asking a legitimate question is just….well douchy. I saw your reply. And I saw rancho. I’ve also seen some here be total dicks and give bad advice to be cute. So I like to get a decent general idea. Sorry my knowledge of jeeping isn’t as broad as yours.

The fundamental problem is that there are no good bolt on shock options for a vehicle like this. There is no good reason why, except that the market is not there to spend the money or get past the belief that a Jeep cannot (or should not) ride and handle well.

I’m beginning to see that sir. You’d think with the current fad of these suckers being driven by every Tom dick and soccer mom in the country there would be more.

I literally just wanted to know what would be the best bolt on readily available to make it ride half ads decent 😂. Right now it’s damn near a bump steer and everything I’ve checked and everything the pretty damn knowledgeable suspension guy I know has said about the setup I have is correct. So it’s gotta be the super stiff shocks lol. I don’t wanna flex on a boulder in the Mojave, I just wanna ride to the deer stand without sustaining whiplash or head injuries 😂. I’ll check out the Black Max and Rancho 5000x.

Your tire choice may also impact ride quality.
@Gasman1979
Just 5 psi change in my 33×12.5×15 tires to the pressure recommended here made all the difference in potholes not jolting up my spine. The very short sidewalls on those tires are probably most of your issue. The tj isn't heavy enough to deal with those sidewalls

Rough country shocks are very rough riding. I went to rancho 5000x and that helped quite a bit. I haven't used the blackmax but those who have used both say they ride softer.OME is supposed to have a softer shocks available now.but who knows how they compare.

You will be limited in choice by what you measure with the axles on the bump cups(compressed shock length) and the length at which the coils unseat(extended length). Measure those and see what you find. Summit racing has the specs easy to find.

Changing bumpstops will help in shock choices

Pick any of them. Giving straightforward facts isn’t douchy. LOL. That post is a good post with good information to think about. If you don’t Ike it, go get some shock advice on FB. Jerry’s over there and he can tell you all day long how the Rancho 9000X that he had given to him aren’t as good as the 5000X he had before.

Such a cry baby. And this isn’t your first time. Throw on some 22 spinners and rough country shocks. That should help your ride.

Asking for advice and not a prick keyboard warrior is being a crybaby 😂 ok dude. Whatever. I appreciate good sound advice without sarcasm or a god complex behind it.

Thanks. I’m dealing with PO install. I would t have went this route. I’m at the point of do I rip it all out and start over or try to repair the messed up shit he did.

Your dad didn’t spank you. <— no sarcasm in that.

P.S. my location is on my profile. If you ever feel like making the trip, I’d be happy to meet.

I had RC springs & shocks installed by the PO, likely as click-bait. The 33's were inflated to something like 36psi.
The Jeep handled horribly. It went screaming past "rough" to "Beyond Stiff". That's good if you're sleeping with a woman, not if you're driving with her. I digress.

Lowered the tire pressure to 26psi and it was a HUGE improvement. Ditched the RC shocks for Rancho's and the Jeep now drives amazing. Long stretches of rough roads (NY potholes for instance.. our surface roads suck) are still a little harsh but otherwise, it handles better than I ever thought it could.

Only downside to the Rancho's is the finish looks like crap now. They need a coat of paint or something.

The problem with every Tom, Dick and Soccer Mom is they have no idea what or where a shock is, how it works or the pro's and cons of various options. They do know about stickers and fancy foo-foo names that marketing tells them they should buy.

While I am a fan of dialing in the psi and replacing the RC shocks, you're going to lose the battle unless you replace those 20's.
Start there. Things will fall in place pretty quickly.

Ooooooo a true keyboard warrior. And a special inbred Alabama boy. Let’s now threaten to fight someone over a post 😂 you’re a fuckin idiot.

I’m not a fan of the 20’s at all. But it was all I could get my hands on at the time. Those will be shit canned for some 16 or 17” on 33’s this spring. I’m also going to do some research into the rancho 5000x and black max. I believe those will be the two to pick from.

I recently installed Black Max shocks and have been pretty happy with them . It is also possible that your springs are too stiff . I have a friend who put too strong a spring on his TJ and it was extremely rough . You could check that by disconnecting the shocks and see how much movement you have . I recently changed out my rear springs and the OME springs I installed are larger in diameter and stiffer than the stock springs . This makes them slightly rougher riding with more jarring on potholes . The tires are likely a big issue on your Jeep . You can't really run those low enough on air for a smoother ride . I'm running 24 to 26 psi on highway and 10 to 14 off-road . I'm running 255/85r16 which are 33's .

The springs are not stiff. You should do the same and remove the shocks and go for a drive.
