Social media cell phone zombies...

Perhaps the notion of a real life zombie apocalypse isn't that fat fetched after all. Recently I've been paying a lot of attention to my surroundings when I go out with the family. One thing seems to be fairly consistent regardless of where we go. People are walking around, everywhere, face down, cell phone in hand, staring at their phone screen.

While I can only speculate as to what they're doing on the phone, I've gotten enough over-the-shoulder glimpses to realize that most people are on some sort of social media app. Be it Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc., I'd guess that's what 9 out of 10 people are doing on their phone at all times.

These people look and act like zombies. They are out of touch with what's going on around them, and regularly bump into things (including other people), trip, walk the wrong direction, and occasionally have run-ins with automobiles (the people in the cars are usually on their phones as well!).

If you don't notice this, pay more attention next time you go out somewhere. It's happening all around us and progressively getting worse.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I loathe social networking. I'm not disputing it has it's purpose (perhaps staying in touch with family), but 9 out of 10 people aren't using it for that. They're using it to share selfies, see how many people "Like" their photos, and bask in the glow of their self-absorbed, narcissistic, online personas.

I'll tell ya, what an interesting time we live in.

Solution: Live where cell phone reception is spotty at best.

Oh, I find it amusing though. It's interesting to watch people "evolving" into idiots.

It constantly gives us something talk about and make fun of. We can always count on someone running into a door, bumping into someone else, and sometimes something much more disastrous.

I'm sorry, but kids these days (most of them at least) are stupid.

No doubt. The human race seems to be devolving at an ever increasing rate.

I browsed an article on the NY Times a couple of days ago. I just couldn't help myself. It was something along the lines of "Socialism is good for woman's orgasms". I thought to myself WTF!? Had to read it. Try to find it, if you can. I thought it was parody, at first, until I realized the author was serious, and was working hard to make a case. I just shook my head and thought, uh, there's a much better solution available here folks. Still chuckle every time it crosses my mind.

Good reference point.

See, shit like this is garbage, complete and utter garbage. The only reason articles like this even exist in the day and age is due to the fact that modern generations CAN NOT unglue themselves from their phones. They need to be constantly looking at things, and this has given rise to the new generation of "clickbait" article, such as the one you referenced.

It has absolutely no real world value at all. There's no knowledge to be gained from it, it's an article with a catchy title, that will undoubtedly get lots of people click on it. In a day before smart phones, that news article simply wouldn't have existed.

I see crap like this all the time. Articles where you wonder how in the hell the author even took the time to write it.

I always used to watch that Mike Judge movie Idiocracy and laugh. I didn't realize that it was slowly coming true, all around us.

People these days are so consumed with technology, that they have forgotten about reality. You have to wonder if one day they may very well indeed end up in "The Matrix".

I'm always shocked to see families out at dinner where the entire family is on an phone or tablet. Really, you don't want to talk to each other? Why bother going out to dinner or eating with your family at all?

My husband is a business owner, so I understand sometimes he has to take a call or answer an email outside of work hours, but I don't get why people are so opposed to having a conversation anymore.

That's my point. People go out and they don't even interact anymore. I go to restaurants, and nearly everyone in there is playing with their phone and not talking to their friends, family, etc. Like you said, why even bother going out?

People have become so focused on their online life, that they've forgotten about their real life. In other words, reality has been displaced for an alternate reality, and they don't seem to care.

We have two kids, and mark my word, I will NEVER let them grow up like this.

I just feel like no one seems to be paying attention to this "epidemic" of sorts. And if they are paying attention, they don't seem to care.

Yeah, same here. We quit Facebook when we had our son because I refuse to raise him on social media. We have a private photo sharing app to share pictures with family and a few select friends. Otherwise, social media is professional only on LinkedIn or so I can follow multiple news sources and the international space station on twitter. Both of those are a check once a day type of thing and I almost never post content.

Yep, I did the same thing. Social media is now only a professional thing that I use to promote this forum and my business (web design). Other than that, I have nothing to do with it.

I always cringe when I see those news stories about people getting mom-shamed online for sharing photos of them doing something with their kid. It serves you right if you ask me. If you're posting stuff publicly online, for the entire world to see, what do you think is going to happen?

Keep your child's life to yourself (and your family). It just amazes me how stupid people can be these days.

Heh, I saw this article, too (link here: Why Women Had Better Sex Under Socialism
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/12/opinion/why-women-had-better-sex-under-socialism.html). Most sociology studies make me cringe and I think this is a lot of stuff being linked together in a correlative way without actual proof of anything. Slap on a snappy headline, and boom- you get an article like this. It is also pretty funny to see what science news makes the popular media and how most of the time the actual results of the study are totally misrepresented in general news outlets.

It's wonderful how none of the rigor and nuance of hard science ever make it to the mainstream media, let alone to social media. Idiocracy, indeed. And these people vote. Think on that a bit.

It scares the crap outta me.

When ya'll said that folks are living a "virtual life", I shuddered a little because I'm seeing it more and more every day.

I won't go into the boring details, but there are more and more people that for them, life outside of social media doesn't really exist.
People are literally killing themselves and others because of SM posts.

You could compare it to those nutty sovereign citizens and their "paper men".

It seems to me that these folks are un/subconsciously splitting themselves in two. You have the physical person and the virtual/SM surrogate, and the surrogate has much more importance than the physical being.

Creeps me out.

Let's all be honest with ourselves anyways... Give me enough money, and I'll make a study that will prove or disprove ANYTHING you want it to.

I know what you mean. Look at the news on any given day, and a good majority of the stories have something to do with outrage over something that someone said on social media.

It sounds like we all need to read Ready Player One. I love how that book ends and I think the book, aside from being a 70s-80s lovefest, is an excellent commentary on this exact issue.

Never heard of it, but I'll be certain to check it out now.

While I can't argue by any means that technology hasn't vastly improved our life in many, may ways. I can however point out that there are some issues that are starting to come to light, that are really frightening.

Think about how many people these days WILL NOT put down their phone. People getting in accidents from texting and driving, people walking everywhere staring at their screen, etc.

Hell, whenever I go out and drive, I look around me at stop lights. I'd say the majority of people sitting at stop lights are on their phones. It's just absurd how attached people are.

Are they that concerned about who is liking their Facebook photos, that they're willing to put their life at risk?

Done with Fakebook..... I mean Facebook a year ago. Now I'm glued to this forum , street glide forum and spearboard for diving.

At least you're learning stuff in the process. Aside from this forum (obviously) I frequent another guitar forum and a motorcycle forum, that's it. But, there's actually things to learn on these kinds of sites. Social networking sites, not so much.

One of my friends who is currently applying for work in data migration got the third degree from a potential employer because he told them he doesn't use Facebook and never set up an account, which is true for him but the person doing the interview just didn't believe him. There are meant to be laws over here were they are not meant to check your social media accounts when considering your application but there is no way to enforce such a thing and all employers do it.

I believe it. These days one of the first things employers do is check your social media accounts. There certainly should be laws against it, because not everyone has a social media account, nor do they want one. Everyone I know has an Instagram, Twitter, etc., etc.. I don't want anything to do with it whatsoever, so I've never made one.
