There's been some good discussion on soft shackles on the board in the last few days, so I thought that I would toss this out for general consumption.

Here's a comparison of the relative strength of various ways to tie a soft shackle:

This is interesting in that they show broken soft shackles and give an indication of where they broke and how much of a load it took to break them.

Here's a site with animated depictions of how to tie various soft shackles. Cool stuff.

These things aren't rocket science to put together if you pay attention and can follow directions.

And then this one, just because of my background is offshore sailing.

For way more information about soft shackles than you would ever want to digest...Google "Soft Shackle".

Very cool! I started using soft shackles when Ricky sent me some with my TRE safety thimble purchase.

I imagine @mrblaine and those guys have a lot of experience with them as well, so I'd be curious to hear their input on soft shackles versus the standard shackle.

It seems that Blaine, from posts in other threads, has dumped his hard shackles and gone exclusivly with soft shackles. Saved a bunch of weight in his recovery kit doing that. (Gee, who's interested in saving weight around here? lol)

Sounds like a good way to salvage usable lengths of a winch line after you cut it on the rocks or something. There's a lot of soft shackles in 80' of winch line.

I carry around 4-5 soft shackles. Lately I too have been thinking about ditching the hard shackles as well. From everything I've seen, these soft shackles seem to get the job done and weigh next to nothing!

My wife keeps telling me our bedroom is not a soft shackle factory, but I disagree :D Obviously I exclusively use soft-shackles on my rigs. But I do keep a couple regular bow shackles (d-rings) with me for the guys who have the shackle mount holes on their bumpers and nothing to go in them .
