Someguys 04

Looking great. I'm in a holding pattern until I get some heat. High today is 35*. But this coming week it's suppose to get back up into the 50's.
55 and sunny most of the day today. i'll work on it as long as it's not raining.

i really like that heater you showed, but i got no 220v in the garage, and no way but an extension cord to get it there with concrete spanning the whole distance. the only 220v in the house is dedicated to the a/c condenser, i jumped it with an extension just to run my welder outside.

Bummer but I get it. Funny story:
When I was having my place built I'd spec'd the garage to have 200amp service just like the house. The contractor had forgot or something because he hadn't ran power to the garage yet. And he'd already put in the rear steps for my back door and sliding glass door. So they had to hand dig a trench to the garage for the power cable. At first he'd tried to talk me out of having 200amp service and wanted to know WHY do you need that in a garage. So I told home this wasn't going to be a place to park cars and stuff. This was going to be a SHOP and I was going to be running a compressor & welder & god knows what else at the same time. So he finally had to do what I asked for.

trying to accomplish small tasks between rain drops.
got the strut towers tacked in.
got the links off and at the shop, the ends have been tapered for welding to the bungs and a few holes added for plug welds to the bung sleeves.
got the axle pulled, so i can weld up the axle end strut brackets and the truss. i really need to get the regear done soon, so i can put it back together proper.

next up is the fuel cell......i pulled the pump from my tank to get some hands on measurements.
lemme say 12" is a tug. that's the pumps absolute limit and it really needs a full body of fuel to pull on it to keep it there.
11 3/4" would be so much more comfortable for the OE pump.
i thought i had my cell covered and protected but some critter got into it and nested.........and pissed all over inside it causing some corrosion to start, so it's crap and i'm shopping tanks again.

today the towers became permanent structures, they are all welded in.
these cannot depend on a cross-bar to keep them from leaning under load, so i added a 1/4" strap up the weak side that wraps the frame tube. i call it the weak side because i could only get about 2" of weld on that outer leg, as it landed on the frames decline.

i put off the ride to Summit because the weather gave me time to get this done, i'll make that drive when it's 37* and raining tomrw.
it was really almost to chilly today to spray paint but i had to get it covered.

the axle is all welded up and got a coat of paint dryin.
it was 70*yesterday and 65*today, so i got a couple things done.
the axle, and i tore apart my fuel pump assy to see if i could figure it out. it and i didn't pan out to be as slick as i had presumed. and i still require a fuel trap and baffles for my undecided fuel cell.
the weather is supposed to stay mild for a few more days, so if i don't get a cell i might just do the re-gear.

i got a couple covid days from work....i was in close contact with someone that has just tested positive for it, so they said stay home and go get a test. if it's neg. i can go back Mon. meanwhile i'm quarantined to the garage, basement and back room.

Got to the urgicare 1/2 hr B4 they opened and was #20 in line. They handed everyone a sheet of paper told me to go register online and don't come back until 11.

got back there at 5 till 11 and was the 2nd to fill out paperwork then the last to get called in. another hr and a 1/2 for a 30 second swab job.............and a waste of time , $ and resources because i have no symptoms...................and a big NEGATIVE result.

not sure if disassembled is 1/2 way but it's out of the way, diffs empty.
1st problem in is the new ring gear won't just drop onto the OE locker like it did the OX in the front. it's nice and sunny with mild temps so i have it sitting in the sun, to warm up. it's just a frogs hair from droppin flat, if the sun won't warm it enough i'll heat it with a small torch.

Put it in the oven at 175* for 30 minutes
30m in the sun and it went on with a couple taps of the rubber mallet. new ring gear is installed on the locker and i got the new races seated.
and i think i'm stuck again, i never ordered another inner pinion bearing i could hone for setup. looking around now.

i found it.........i knew i had to have it.
the JK Rubi Dana 44 bearings are the same on both front and rear, on the carrier as well as the inner pinion bearings, but the outer pinion bearings do differ front to back.

it's gettin dark and i'm gettin hungry so we'll pick up on this tomrw after work.

yesterday eve, i took a stab at the math to try and get a shim stack on the pinion. and got it installed, with just a light preload.
today i played with the carrier. 1st attempt netted me a .012 on the backlash, i need .006-.010, so i'll try another setting tomrw eve after work.

i started into a new rear bumper. the old 1 ain't gonna fit or look right so i'm making another similar to it. i should have it ready for a preliminary fitting tomrw. not sure if i wanna bother with brackets and bolts, i may weld this on permanent.

well it took me a couple attempts to get it close the way the shims worked out i was able to come up with a .006 for the BL. tonight when i get home i'll run some grease across it and see what it gives me.

i made a decision about the fuel cell and was gonna try Boyd welding 18x12x12, but they only work over the net and their connection is not secure, so unless they respond to my email, i may have to keep looking.

they got right back to me, there was a link i missed that offered a secure connection. but since i had them through email i went ahead and sent them a drawing of what i want quoted. we'll see what they say.

i tried that bumper out to see how it fits, i'm gonna wrap the edges some i think and just make it a little more than just a slab of steel.
i think i'm gonna take it up just a bit higher too. maybe another 1/4-3/8".

now to go paste up that ring gear ........wish me luck.

ya, i got some paste on it and the pinions to shallow. so that's tomrw's task..........it's dark, cold and dinner time.

so i laid off the jeep stuff fri eve, wanted to start into it early this morn but 30* temps and 10 diff things kept pushin me back.

i did manage to get by the Eastwood store and snag some internal frame coating for all the new metal on the back end. and even managed to get it shot.
and i did get the pinion reset and the 1st backlash check is loose so i need to fix that.

so i been dickin with the rear diff when able after work. i'm on the 4th set of the pinion depth what was in there wasn't close the Revo starting spec was way lower than that. so i'm climbing the ladder.
i made a big change to get off the top of the tooth but i think it's still kinda high on it with a .008 backlash.
gonna try and bring the pinion up a little more and see what that'll give me. i'm closin in, i believe.

@hosejockey61 , would you agree, a little deeper with the pinion head?
