Space between winch cross bars and spool?

Just a quick question for you winch experts, I recently replaced my steel cable with 100' of 3/8 synthetic line. I managed to fit it all on there, but there is only around 1/2" to 3/4" of space between the full spool and the winch cross bars. How much room do you generally run? I could see how I could run into clearence issues on short side pulls where the line could stack up on one side of the drum, so I'm of thinking about cutting some off and turning that into a winch extension, just wondering how much to take off. Thanks in advance!

Yep cut some of that off, I'd take it down to 80' and carry the 20' as an extension after splicing thimbles onto it. Plus the fewer layers of rope on the drum the harder the winch can pull.

I did cut about 20 feet off, made it into a extension with padded soft loops similar to TRE, worked well and got to practice splicing for the first time here at home rather than out on the trail
