Spluttering and backfiring

Hi I have a 1997 2.5 wrangler and when it's ticking over it starts to spluttering and when you rev it ,it will clear with a bit of backfire then will clear itself then after a minute or two will do it again ,once you get driving along its OK, only does it whet ticking over ,anyone had a similar problem, thanks

I do not know what "ticking over" means. Is this a slang type saying for when the starter is engaged?
Not an insult. Just don't understand what the question is.

It's when you have started your engine and it's on tick over,the engine is just running
