So ever since I bought my TJ I have this one squeak coming from somewhere in the front. I've put over 60k miles on it and it hasn't gone away. Recently, I went offroading, and now the squeak is a little more frequent, to where it's actually annoying the hell out of me and I want to do something about it. I can hear it in the city over every little bump or uneven road surface, and even on the highway, and of course when going over speed bumps. Sounds like the kind of noise some old creaky school bus would make.

I know squeaks and rattles are part of just owning a Jeep. I am willing to tolerate some rattles and the occasional squeak, but this one is really getting on my nerves. I really can't tell where it's coming from. I don't know if it's even from the interior or exterior of the Jeep. I've tried shaking the Jeep to try and replicate it and pin point where it's coming from but no luck. It just happens over uneven road surfaces and I don't think it's anything mechanical because the U-Joints, front end bushings, etc. have all been replaced or are in good shape.

So where are the common "squeak" points you guys have found on your Jeep? What should I check? Any ideas? I'm in college, and my mother, who is coming to visit me over the weekend constantly tells me that I should get rid of my little TJ and buy a newer modern vehicle with more tech and features, even though my TJ has been more dependable than any of the vehicles she's owned lmao. So I don't want to give her another reason to tell me that, ideally I'm hoping to have this sorted before she shows up and says something about it.

Get a hose, or a pump garden sprayer or a super soaker and try hosing off places you suspect the noise is coming from.

If it goes away then you found it.

I’ve got a bad squeak on my rear track bar axle side I’m going to tackle this winter. I found it with my buddy rocking the jeep around while I laid under it, hunting the noise. I was certain it was a coming from the spring, but turned out to be the trac bar, frame side.

I've got a rattle that I haven't been able to find since 2015. Every time I'm under the front end I grab and pull everything under there but have never found anything loose. But I can't say that it's gotten worse, either.

If you Google jeep noises you will go down a rabbit hole you may never return from-

It amazes me how something can be so exposed compared to most vehicles and drive you crazy trying to find it-

I’ve seen everything from four-wheel-drive linkages, seats, a front track bar dropped mount at the frame, and on and on.

Be persistent.

So the axle u joints I'm pretty sure are original, but they look okay. No grinding or popping when I'm turning. Front driveshaft U joints and centering ball have been replaced and the rear u joints recently so I doubt it's that. If it was the axle u joints though, I wouldn't be able to hear it clearly at highway speeds right? I'm thinking it's something inside the Jeep now, but I just really don't know what. I tried seeing if hosing it down on the underside would get rid of the squeaks, but that did nothing.

Is it rhythmic in time with mph?(probably driveshaft or brakes)Does it squeak when you turn the wheel?(spray silicon on the steering firewall boot from the inside) does it happen hitting bumps? (Hood safety catch rubbing steel on steel)

Give us a better description

THIS. I chased a squeak for several years that I could not replicate by rocking the jeep or jumping up and down on it. It wasn't until someone mentioned purchasing the little plastic wear piece for the hood safety catch that caught my attention. My 1998 never came with one but my son's 2003 and my daughter's 2004 did have them. I found a piece of polyethylene sheeting and made an isolator to keep the latch from rubbing and no more squeak!!
