Strange sound, timing chain?

I chased a misfire for a year. Plugs, coil, spark plug wires, checked the harness. Turned out to be a bad crank position sensor.

Wish it was that easy. I've replaced every sensor anyone has said has a chance of causing a problem, on top of smoke testing everything, compression testing, replaced throttle body, and a dozen other things. Nothing has fixed it, but everyone's that listened thinks it's mechanical. Fingers tightly crossed. We're going to crack it open tomorrow if the weather holds.

There shouldn't be a need to pull the condenser or evacuate the AC system.

Unless you happen to get a really short puller, you will have to pull the radiator.

Put the Jeep in 4th gear and parking brake on when you get ready to remove the crank bolt. If you have access to an impact wrench, that's even better.

I'm going to do my darnedest to not pull the AC, but I'm definitely pulling the radiator. Not that hard a task, and then I can really drain that sucker.

Luckily my buddy has an impact. Mind if I ask why 4th gear in particular? No parking brake, sadly, the guy who did my 8.8 skipped a few things 🙄

4th is just straight through, no gears. The higher gear prevents you from moving the Jeep with the wrench. 1st gear would make it easier to move the Jeep.

So we have this pulled apart, but there's no retainer pin or spring, and I've read the 99 is supposed to have it.

How important are these? We unbolted it by hand and neither came out.

I heard the opposite, my 99 didn’t have it.

At this point it's been running for at least 15 years without one, so I guess we'll just go with that flow.

We managed to get a lot done tonight. Sprockets and chain on, new timing cover, everything is pretty, but we ran into a few snags and will have to finish the job this weekend.

I'll update when we get it buttoned up, I'm pretty excited. Fingers crossed my misfire is gone after this.

If there wasn't a pin and spring, there should have been a thrust plate holding the cam in .

Mac, What does that pin ride against to hold the camshaft in position ? Hopefully not the Aluminum cover.

Been a long time since I did it. I do in fact think it rides on the cover...and I think I used a piece of aluminum...but it was before I started YouTubin everything...let me search my pictures.

YES!!! That was definitely there. Alright, I feel better.

Yes, it rides on the cover.

Cloyes crank gears were not correctly machined and wouldn't fit on the crank. Don't remember what year's specifically.

Rides the cover? I don't follow.

My 97 has the spring and snubber...the spring rides on the timing cover.

You've got the thrust plate...no timing cover contact.

This thread reminds me I should order a new snubber to have on hand if I take it apart again.
