Thought I'd get a proper thread started for my '06 Wrangler TJ Renegade. They're not common in the UK so getting parts and modifying it is a challenge but it makes it all the more fun. We're about to enter our 3 month of the National Lockdown here in the UK so this forum has been keeping me sane!

This isn’t going to be your typical TJ build. My plan is to use the TJ as cross between an overlander/Grand Tourer. I do loads of road trips across the UK and Europe. Last year, with the TJ pretty much stock, we did Wales twice, France, Spain and Italy. It did well for the most parts being reliable both on road and off road. We don’t have much crazy off road terrain here so I don’t need to do too much to get the off road capability where I want. My plan is to build it to a place where I’m getting the maximum level of comfort on the road (for those long boring French highways) while maximising the off road capability that I need. I really want to try and push the comfort levels to see if I can make the TJ into a proper Grand Tourer. Also, most of the TJ I’ve seen in the UK are just nasty. Really poorly maintained. So I really want to keep this as clean as possible and also roll back some of the shitty work done by previous owners.

I bought it last Summer after wanting one since I was a kid (classic). I grew up in California you either wanted a Mustang or a Wrangler. I got very lucky and found the right Jeep at the right time. It was the first TJ I found and fell in love instantly. Far better than anyone I viewed after it. I paid £9,300 ($13,000) and it only had 43,000 miles on it. I've been doing a lot of travelling with it since I bought so only just now getting the time to properly work on it. I drove it across Europe to Barcelona, then to Menorca and even Sardinia in Italy. It's been solid the whole time and bags of fun. TJs are even more rare in Europe so it turned heads everywhere I went. I even had people coming up to me asking if they can take a photo with it! Here's a few shots of it as I bought it before I list the work I want to do with it.

Pretty much came bone stock. On the UK Reg it's listed as a TJ Renegade Soft Top. After doing loads of research, it turns out the Renegade is a UK and Australia specific edition. It was mainly for the '06 TJ to help shift it before the JK came out.
- Terrafirma shocks with no lift - Never heard of them, did some digging and found they are mainly used for Land Rovers. The ride is shocking and it's sagging all over the place. One of the first things I'm changing.
- They added in Corbeau Moab seats. They look nice but so damn uncomfortable. Way too narrow IMO.
- Had a pretty tidy rust proofing underneath with limited surface rust elsewhere. There is some diamond plating on the fenders that is likely covering rust.

Inevitably this list is going to increase as I get going.

Planned Modifications:
- Upgrade lighting to LED Halo Lights - Done
- Install Bestop Supertop NX Twill - Done
- Rancho 5000x Shocks with H&R 1.5in Lift Springs
- Smoked indicator light kit
- Restore the original decals (It came with some a Native American 'Renegade' decal)
- Brushed Stainless steel grille inserts (my radiator is getting pummelled by the motorway debris here)
- All new rubber seals
- Billet fuel cap
- New fuel cap bezel
- New seat mounts (previous owner installed fixed mounts)
- Double Din Head Unit (Sony AX 5550d)
- Matching black twill spare wheel cover
- Refurbish door handles and plastic trim
- Reupholster seats in leather
- Leather wrap roll bar cover to match seats
- New speakers
- Rugged Ridge AT Fender Flare
- Forged aluminium rims (Looking at MTs, Pro Comp, or Mammoth - any opinions?)

Well, I'm in for the ride. Great Looking TJ, excited to see any travel photos you have from taking it across boarders!

And you can still edit your original post and keep adding to it.

Here are a couple snaps of the first couple mods. I'm not crazy about the Halo lights after all. They work great on the road but I can't get over how the ring makes the car look a little old and dinky. Reminds me of an old man wearing bifocals. Might swap them out soon. I'm involve with the Supertop NX. Can't believe how good the Black Twill is. 100% worth it. It's even warmer than the hardtop (not difficult) and it's been holding up great in this snow we're having.

Sounds like a good setup. All you need is enough to outrun the Fuzz on their bikes right?

Only Joking. Stoked to see this American Iron Flex over seas.

I highly recommend Ironman shocks. They handle great and are available in the Uk/Eu. Rachos don't seem cost effective to me when import duty and shipping is added on top.

I actually had them ordered through Summit Racing in the states and it came up to £215 inc shipping, taxes and customs.

God, what’s going on with US shipping! I know there was that crazy storm but my packages are all stuck in sorting hubs out there.
Dumb numbie question, but you haven't done the lift yet as far as I can tell. Will the shocks be the same before and after lift?

Add in sound deadening, makes a huge improvement on long journeys. I'm still to do the inner front doors and behind the dash.
Definitely, I order the Noico 80ml. Arrived last week. I'm going to take the seats, carpets etc out for a cleaning then will lay down the Noico.

Nope haven't done the lift yet. Definitely changing the shocks. They're garbage. I'm doing Rancho 5000x 0-2in shocks and H&R 35mm lift Springs. Just got the springs in today but the shocks have been stuck in a Tennessee Fedex sorting hub since the 13th :(.

You really are on a roll, most inspiring!
I suspect my order from Quadratec will take a while to arrive. But I knew that would be the case when I placed the order as it will only ship when all the items are ready and I knew some were on back order.
WIll you be doing the change of springs and shocks yourself? I'm not sure I fancy it and not sure I have the facilities and tools for the job anyway.

Yeah, it's the same for me. Just don't have the space to do it at the moment. I have a mechanic my family has been using for 30 years. He's been supporting my TJ love and has been doing any work I need at cost. I'll get him to sort the suspension and I'll do the less complicated bits. What have you ordered from Quadratec?

We have a guy just down the road from us who has serviced our cars for a few years now, but he is not in any way a 4x4 specialist so I am weighing up if I should let him loose on fitting upgrades or bite the bullet and go further afield to somebody more specialist. I think chances are I will go with the local guy as if I had the space and even some of the tools I would be tempted to do it myself, so it can't be that hard surely :ROFLMAO:

Biggest item I have ordered from Quadratec is a replacement twill skin for my roof, just keeping my fingers crossed that all the hardware I have from the original top fits with it OK. There was some benefit to adding more to the order as the incremental shipping cost was lower than ordering stuff in too many batches. So I also ordered a RR Spartacus hevay duty tyre carrier kit, Tomken winch plate, MORE 1" body lift, MORE motor mounts with 1" lift, JKS quicker disconnects, some hinge light brackets, and some bumper end caps for when I take the existing chunks of plastic off. Some of that is in preparation for lifting it. My plan is to do the lift with the OME kit, then with the body lift I should be OK to run 33" tyres.

In other news, found these YJ ‘Wrangler’ emblems. Debating them putting them on. I always loved these on the YJ but wondering if it will look weird on a TJ

Hated the filler cap so thought this would be a great time to add some Jeep Jewellery. Added a new Bezel and bought the DV8 Billet Filler cap. Absolutely love it.

Sorted the new double din and usb plug. Very happy with the results. I went with the Connects2 wiring harness and usb plug in the end. I’m not sure if they have them in the US but their products looked easier and cleaner to install than Metra. Still don’t have the AC controls flush as the head unit sticks out a little too far.

Went with the Sony AX5550d (AX5000 in the States) for two reasons:

1. While it’s a double din screen the back is single din so it didn’t require any cutting in the dash.

2. The capacitive screen makes a world of difference in the sun and was worth the extra money over the cheaper models.
