The TJ Mirror Company auto dim / temp / compass mirror one month review

My 2005 TJ did not come with the factory wire harness that runs on top of the dash under the vent cover. I made my own harness and ran wires for power and to the sensor in front. I located the sensor up front under the left front fender near the orange running light. .

Mine doesn't either. I do have a harness and connector for the sensor inside the grill though, so I figure there must be an empty connector somewhere that I could pick up and not have to run all the way to the front. Just gotta go through the FSM schematics and find it.

Any solution for me would have to include home link as well. Tired of having to haul around 2 remotes (one for my garage, one for the gate) and having to lock them up in the console or glovebox every time I park somewhere, and then forgetting to get them out until I need to hit the button.

Are the sensors interchangeable? Do you have details on the sensor you used?

I've tried two so far and neither is any better.

I was considering installing the TJ Mirror Co mirror but didn't like the cost. I started researching what others have done on internet. I ended up going with used GENTX 453 Mirror. It comes with several models. I chose to go with the unit that has the homelink, compass and ambient temperature readout. It comes with green display to match the rest of TJ dash lights. It has auto dimming feature. On eBay you can find these mirrors in very nice shape. Connector w/pigtail and wire harness cover included. I had to match this mirror with Nissan factory temperature sensor. Nissan sensor is calibrated to be used with this mirror. I tried using jeep sensor and the temperature reading was way off. (don't use Jeep temp sensor that's located on passenger side in front of radiator) Also sensor that's on the driver side near radiator will also give you false temperature reading. I thought something was wrong with the mirror.

This entire setup cost me $100 bucks and it provides more features then new mirror.

I’m going to get one of those. I like the home link feature as well with the temp and compass. Thx for the tip.

Seems like I've seen adapters for mirrors that are too big for the button on the glass.

They make different size buttons. I put a Gentex with Homelink and a compass on mine and i had to purchase a new button. Found a set of 3 with different sizes on amazon. Only issue i had was the autozone type glue didn't hold the button well. Finally found some on amazon that worked and it's holding up fine now for several months.

Mine isn't an issue with the windshield mounted piece.. the button. It's the mating dovetail on the second mirror. First mirror and the stock mirror mount with no issues.

Is the dovetail slightly wider? My stock mirror fit the stock mount with no issue but, the Gentex mirror had a wider Dovetail and would pop off the stock mirror mount. just wondering if you have the same issue? it's not by much etc, I had to remove the stock mount and put on a slightly wider one. I bought that 3 pack because autozone only had the same size as my stock mount was.

Truth? I didn't trouble shoot it. I was frustrated and put the mirror back in the box.

The part number of the second mirror from TJMC was the same as the first one I recv'd and I had no issue with mounting the first. The second slides on the button thing until I try to tighten it.

Fact.. mildly interesting. As the winter temps approach...

1. The mirror alternates the text ICE with the ambient temperature
2. The delta is seeming to narrow. Still not spot on, but off by only a degree or two.

The inconsistency is what makes it a mind fuck to just look at the temp and quickly run the math. Sometimes it is off by a degree and other times by as much as ten degrees.

Honestly I care more that I am in a degree or two on the cold end, I like the ice warning… but I don’t think I have seen one to accurate on any car on the warm side…Even the wife’s benz. It’s a black car so it’s just a rolling heat sink. The environmentals of a car seem to just futz them up …and you would think rolling down the highway you could get a good read… lol.

When I was on social media, it was always entertaining seeing people post the pics of their car thermometers in summer like they actually believed it was 125.

The TJ one is about an inch from the condenser and radiator and it's down in a groove so there's gonna be a turbulent dead zone there. The places you'd want to put it for a good reading would all put it in harms way, like hanging in open air under the front bumper.

Yup.. Black Jeep here. The manual does caution to allow a few minutes after you start driving for the temps to settle in. But most of my "readings" have been with the Jeep sitting in the driveway overnight. I would expect that to be a good test of ambient versus sensor temps after the surrounding body has cooled to ambient.

I moved the sensor from the stock location (two inches from the radiator) to up under the drivers front fender.

What is, is. Not a huge priority.

Did you just swap out the mirror and not the harness?
