Thinking seriously about selling the TJ

I bought the TJ a little over a year ago. I have really enjoyed it. As I posted a few weeks ago, to me it's like a sports car for people who don't like pavement.

But alas ...

I picked up the 1999 XJ a couple of months back. I also have a 2009 Sport Track with very low mileage. Three vehicles. The S/T is used for running into town, hauling loads, highway travel.

The Jeeps don't see much pavement. I just made a trip into the mountains by myself last week and took the TJ, left the XJ at home.

I'm thinking that I can get about $8,000 usd in this market on the TJ. She's a 2005 Sport with just over 160,000km (pushing 100,000 miles), mostly stock but with a 4" lift and 31" rubbers. I could put a couple grand into the XJ, get some needed work on the S/T (mostly cosmetic), and have some pocket change left over to squirrel away. Keeping three vehicles is maybe a bit much, and the Cherokee will serve my logistical needs better than the TJ. I just love the little TJ, but ...

So, does anyone want to try to talk me into keeping all three vehicles?

If I do sell it, I intend to stick around here and bug you guys with XJ questions anyway.

Half heartedly looking for another one, but all the reasons I sold my other one are still there.

TJ's are getting expensive. I can get an early JK Rubicon for what I can get a descent TJ for. Just might do that, though the spousal unit might get pissed. Like Squatch and his stationwagon.

My sister's beau is making me an offer on my XJ that I'm finding hard to refuse (twice what I paid for it in 2012). The problem is exactly what @StG58 is experiencing: Seller's Remorse. It's a very real thing, and I don't want to go through that again (been there many, many times). I would encourage you to think long and hard before cutting the TJ loose, my friend. Otherwise, you may end up spending all the revenue from it on your other vehicles, and then end up shopping for a replacement TJ! At that point, what did you really accomplish? Just some food for thought.

As the young folk say, I feel ya.

Having the XJ taking her place and figuring that logistically the XJ is just more suitable to my needs eases that a bit.

I'd never want to own a sports care. A Sebring convertible was the closest I ever came, and to this day I rue that vehicle. I remember the day we came back from a trip and the battery had drained. I somehow had not noticed the absence of a battery under the hood and was appalled when I learned that I had to remove the front d/s tire to get to the damned thing. Pissed me off!

I digress. I guess the TJ feels, to me, kind of like having a sports car.

I'll have to chew on this for awhile. But thanks for your two cents!

I do missions work in the mountains here, visiting villages, bringing in help when needed, discipleship and Bible teaching when wanted. So the whole XJ thing was so that I could have more space to haul people and gear. You know how limited the TJ is in that respect.

I owned a white '99 Sebring convertible. Nice car. Fun to cruise in. Fortunately, I was smart enough to sell it before it became a problem child, which was inevitable, in my mind.

I do missions work in the mountains here, visiting villages, bringing in help when needed, discipleship and Bible teaching when wanted. So the whole XJ thing was so that I could have more space to haul people and gear. You know how limited the TJ is in that respect.

Sorry, trying but just not seeing it. You've been stereotyped.

From a functional standpoint, this is where I would be. I'd say "should have bought an LJ", but the extra space afforded would be negligible compared to the XJ. But for personal use, probably hard to beat a TJ for fun - can't take the roof and doors off your XJ in a hurry...

Honestly, I start getting that feeling around this time every year. I almost posted mine on marketplace yesterday after I went with no windows to pick my kids up from school in 103F. Nobody had a good time and we were all beat and smelled like a locker room when we walked in the door.

I've found that sometimes, when you get those feelings, its best to park them and just walk away for a while. In a month or two or more, try again and see how you feel about it.

Mine has been sitting on the driveway for the past two years now. I rarely ever drive it at all anymore. Having arthritis it’s just too painful to keep up with anymore. Nine surgeries later, hurricane Beryl ate my hardtop, wife hates it, etc.
Currently, and unfortunately, Ruby has a for sale sign on the spare.

This time next weekend I'll have it at 9,000' in Colorado so it'll be far more pleasant.

But today...I have fab work to do to get it ready. Nothing I love more than long cotton sleeves, heavy jeans and boots in 100F weather!

Personally, I'd rather have the TJ, but I need the cargo capacity and people capacity of the XJ.

Which is why I'd like to keep them both but have to think about long-term costs.

On the one hand, insurance is the main added expense, as well as annual plates. If I have both vehicles, though, the operating and maintenance costs are split between the two so I'm not looking at that being increased in any meaningful way. Maybe the doubled annual insurance and registration payments are worth it.
