Thoughts on high mileage LJ Rubicon? 1 owner 193k miles

Can you wrench on it yourself?like replacing that 6speed trans? That is a great deal on an LJR.but if you have to pay for everything to get done for you it would kill the deal

I can do small things by myself. I have a few close friends and family members that i am. Currently leaning from that do alot of the bigger projects

And this is where YouTube is your friend. If it needs to be repaired/replaced, you are almost guaranteed there's a video on that specific repair. Plus the amazing resources just on this forum. Add to the fact that TJs are almost ludicrously easy to work on-plenty of room in most areas plus the ground clearance. And then there's the sheer numbers of TJs out in the wild. Used parts are plentiful, and the secondary parts market is starting to take notice.

Yeah! Im going to have to learn from yourube for sure and figure out what other tools i need. That's one of the things that i love about jeeps. So many parts lol. Random question but how much do used soft tops for LJs and half doors go for?,

That's a good price! If it is in your budget considering getting a one way uhaul with trailer to haul it vs having to drive it that long without proper maintenance done.
For soft top I would look into Sierra tops. Half doors vary a lot, I got a set recently for 300 and I thought it was a steal

Congratulations on the great find. Original owner and 193K miles for $9K is a great deal. You were smart to look out of state. Fly out and enjoy the drive home.

Thank you! I learned my lesson from alot of people on this forum for sure. I was being hard headed buying jeeps in the midwest because i didn't want to fly or drive far lol.

I wonder how much that would be? I could look into that. Sierra tops? I will check it our thank you. Dang 300 does sound like a steal. Especially if you didn't have to change the color of the doors

@daylee6003 lots of good advice here. Good price. Fly out, have a pre-purchase inspection done. If it’s satisfactory drive home. When you get home start correcting the surface rust and then fluid film the inside of the frame.

Get a hoist for the hardtop and mount it to your garage ceiling.

Soft top prices range, but Sierra Off-road Acoustic Vinyl looks fantastic. It’s what I’m going with.

Half doors are harder and harder to come by. Bank on $1000 for a good set. Even after that they may need to be painted or keyed.

Looks pretty good to me for $9k (truthfully somewhat low, so would make me question what is wrong). Keep in mind the 6 sp can be a problem, search here for the issues.
Would not be in a big hurry for soft top and half doors. This winter will be good with the hard top and you can always take the doors off when it gets nice.

Yeah great ideas for sure! Sadly i don't have a garage yet. That's the plan for the frame. I don't plan on driving it in the snow. Thanks for link and help

Maybe he doesn't know the value of it? Idk he is a older retired gentlemen. He said he has never taken the doors off before haha. I will look into the problems for the manual thank you. Doesn't the auto have more problems?,

Would not count on that. Good to talk for a while on the phone, you can tell a lot about a person that way. (not always)
Might want to send some deposit if it is going to be a while, someone will buy it. Looks to be a bargain, if all good as pics.

For 05-06 TJs, don’t forget about the OPDA. Ask if it’s been replaced. It can have a catastrophic failure but I believe it doesn’t pose risk of spontaneous failure - there’s warning signs (“angry sparrows” or “barrel of monkeys” sounds).

Ask about the cooling system and the radiator specifically. From my experience and reading, they commonly fail around roughly 120,000 miles. If it hasn’t been replaced, it is likely near end of life and you would want to know if you can trust it with those 1600 miles.

Ask about the front driveshaft. Was it replaced? Was it rebuilt or maintained? I am reading more and more often about factory front driveshaft failures where the double cardan joint seizes and causes a rapid unscheduled disassembly of the transfer case. (This can happen with a neglected aftermarket double cardan rear driveshaft as well). It would be a wise move to remove the front driveshaft or at least unbolt it from the axle yoke and hang it up out of the way for the trip. Replacement NP241ORs are not easily gotten.

Ask about the transmission. Sometimes the NSG370 develops problems with shifting into 1st, 2nd, and reverse, and popping out of gear. At least pay attention to this during the test drive.

Although the price is already surprisingly low, these are all possible negotiating points in addition to being reliability concerns.

Edit: all that oil all over the pan and transmission looks like a heavy rear main seal, oil pan, or valve cover leak. Ask about the leak and check the oil. Check the oil periodically on the way home as well to gauge the leakage rate and ensure you don’t run it dry.
