Or just install one. I just picked up one of these, it is local for me. This is great for those dusty conditions, that sometimes leaves you choking.

Install was quick and since the filters come in a 2-pack, I've got the next change already on hand. I did use longer s/s screws though, 1"- #10. The OEM duct did not fit over the top of the filter in mine, it may on yours. But it's not really needed anyways.

What's different about the 2002 from prior years (the linked kit says 2002-2006 only)?

I'm not sure. Someone else may chime in. I know that 02 and 03 was the break for a lot of changes.

It may not keep the interior clean with the doors off but it probably does a decent job at keeping dust out of the ductwork, HVAC box, heater core and evaporator, which isn't a bad thing. I recently changed the one in my pickup and was appalled at all the junk that fell out and would otherwise just be trapped in tbere forever. I even got a noticeable boost in the air output because of how many leaves were in there.

I went on and bought one. There are some places I wheel that are so dusty that I stay zipped, and this will make that yet more effective.

Not to take anything away from his design, but I'd be a bit careful when washing your Jeep, especially with a pressure washer. I'd bet the filter will get wet, at the least, if you hit the windshield and cowl area much. Might suggest some thin foam tape between it and the cowl panel for a better seal.

While more complicated, there is a reason I designed mine the way I did.

I figured I'd try to retrofit the factory shroud over this one but if it doesn't work out I'm only into it $25. I'm open to superior alternatives.

When I’m headed to dusty roads, I use a flat shop vacuum filter (washable filter material) held down by a rectangular sheet magnet on the cowl intake. I also use one over the air filter in the air box as a pre filter.

I use the HVAC so rarely, I changed the cabin air filter in the Gladiator for the first time this summer, and other than a couple acorns (damn mice) it looked brand new. TJ does not have one, and it doesn’t seal well enough to even think it would be useful.

I might be biased, but would take exception to that, both sealing and usefulness. While only a few months installed, I've had evidence of neither water or dirt leaking. Some people might use their HVAC regularly, Jeep purpose and use varies greatly.

Betting this guy would like something other than what was offered from the factory...

I don’t mean the air box… the cabin itself. You can turn off the HVAC, and you’ll still nearly Cheech and Chong on a dirt road…
