I have searched and read through everything and it seems the consensus is to go with upgrading the hinges and using a tire carrier like to MORryde/Exogate. I am terrified of trying to get those hinges off.

Does anyone have a positive experience with either of the below options?

I recently installed the MORryde kit on my TJ in preparation for moving to 33's in the future. I'm really happy with the product. The install wasn't difficult but I'd suggest having an extra set of helping hands when installing the large plate; it's heavy and, an extra person to help hold it while you're aligning and tightening bolts makes the process go smoother. As for loosening the OEM bolts, mine were easy, although I've heard that's not always the case.

The bolts will break for the most part. Heating and cooling cycles help. Use an impact driver if you can and that will help. If using just the star bits, be ready to have some of those break in place.

Replace everything with grade 8 hardware or better. My tailgate doesn't squeak or shake any longer.

Enjoy and have fun.

I think I remember reading there was a change in the hinges at some point between model years. When I did the MORryde on my 2005 they came right off with no issues at all.

I have a Smittybilt XRC rear bumper/carrier. It probably weighs 150lbs more than I need, but luckily I don’t know enough to understand that it’s wrong. The tire carrier bracket is adjustable to account for varying offsets.

got the rugged ridge one on amazon and seems to work fine. Not as solid as others but will do for now while I search around.

I put mine all by myself, heat the bolts with a small torch like you get at home depot for plumbers use and bolts break free from the tub, however I had to then lay my door flat and drill out the bolts holding the original hinge to the door.
Once they were drilled out, the bolts simply turned with my fingers and came right out.
Just be patient.

My old one cost $20 and held up great for many years with a 35" spare. No need to remove the hinges either.:)
p.s. I made a cheaper version (free) with a 1/2" thick piece of steel too. My current one came with my bumper and the hinges work perfectly after 4 years with a heavy tire/wheel combo.
