TJ doesn't accelerate when pressing the gas pedal

My tj is acting strange. All liquids are fine. When I put the car in reverse, the car doesn't go in to gear right away. Same story when I put in to drive. I drove around and the car drives and then suddenly it is no longer in gear. So I'm pressing the gas pedal and the car is not excelerating. Going up the hill, no power at all. If anyone has an answer, please let me know. Thanks

Get it on level ground, warmed up to temperature, then put it into N and check the transmission fluid level. Has to be done in neutral on your transmission.

Also, fill it with ATF+4 *only*, and slightly over full is better than under full.

X2, the engine has to be running too in addition to the transmission being in Neutral.

It must be all the way up to the full/hot line. It is always better for an automatic transmission to be slightly overfilled than underfilled which will cause slippage.

I know this is an old thread, but how much overfill is too much?

you'll know because it'll puke it out the breather. I can't see how you could have enough to actually make it shift wrong. Excess fluid in large amounts could cause extra fluid drag on the drums, but it would not be under pressure so it shouldn't affect the hydraulics.
