6 miles on channel 16. Basically went beyond the range of the little handheld. He could still hear me past mile 8. That was with the small antenna that came with the radio. I have a 32" 6db gain antenna I'll be mounting same place you did.
Wow, that's amazing.

I was able to talk with @Indy when we were on the top of the granite slab, he was at the trailhead, but as you know that's well within the 6-mile mark. Now we just need @Thunderhead to make the switch.

I'm working on permissions to use a repeater here on Cobb Mt. Then piggyback to the Sutter Buttes repeater, then Chico's. I could potentially communicate with @Thunderhead while he's on his front porch while he's sucking down a PBR!

😉

I would guess a Daystar. Maybe KU73011BK. But I've guessed wrong more than once today.

Edit: or a Rugged GMR25? They have a HAM version too.

Then only go for a week?
It's a 3 day drive each way with 10+ hours each day. Not trying to pile on excuses but my kids will likely have hockey tryouts at that time. My wife also has an important job that is over an hour drive from home. I'll get to Moab another time. Hopefully I get the chance to meet up with the forum crew at some point.

I'm bringing these ones for everyone who is to cheap to get a GMRS setup:

Not kidding ;)

On a more serious note, I would like to add that a GMRS capable handheld is actually a smart thing to carry in your Jeep regardless. Even if you don't want to spend $150-$200 on a hard mounted setup, for $25 or so you can get a cheap handheld to carry in your Jeep at all times.

More-and-more people are switching to GMRS, and given how superior the range of GMRS is to CB, I can see why.

Will you be distributing mandatory callsigns along with the radios?

I’ve been trying to study for the ham license as much as possible but just in case I don’t take my test before the Fest I paid for the GMRS license so I would be legal. I’m now WRKP406.

What's this shit about paying for a license to use a GMRS? What if you don't?
