Project:
OEM intake filter box relocation.
Scope:
Find a different intake filter box from a different car that fits on top of the motor or in between the fuse box and the motor.
Parts
1- (1) Intake filter box from a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
2- (1) 3 x 2 Drainage reduced rubber fitting.
3- (2) 3/8" insulated metal cable holder.
4- (2) 10/32" x 3/8" machine screws with nylock nut.
5- New air filter
Tools
Basic shop tools.
Donor car
1993 Oldsmobile Cutlas Cierra 3.3L V6
Visit our local Pull-A-Part and walk around the american cars section looking for intake filter box that suites the project needs until cross with a Cutlass Ciera. Some Cutlass models have a different intake box, confusing.
After some refreshments we return to the Offroad Garage and start the modification works.
Removed the OEM TJ intake and start presenting the new intake filter box.
Once the new location was selected, proceed to cut the intake tube. For this I do use a hack saw but, another preferred cutting device can be used.
I do use this dimension to cut the tube as I do order a flexible below to replace the reducer fitting but can be cut it about 2 full inches.
The Oldsmobile box output connects to the inside of the opening and has the holder tab on the outside where the reducer fitting will be strapped. This tab was removed using a air grinder
The TJ intake tube is 2 and 5/8" OD do I do use tire mounting grease and some muscle to insert it on the 3 x 2 fitting. The intake box output is 3" OD so easy insertion at this end.
Line up the tube and the new air filter box, mark the cable holder location and drill the holes for the machine screws. Self tapping screws can be used in this step as well.
Air filter part number founded in the intake box. As expected, Auto Zone fella can't assist as I does not know the motor size.
Label in the box indicate the AC delco filter part number
Disclaimer
This modification was made to solve an issue the new Hi-line fender install brings into play. This mod was not made on the attempt attempt of performance gain. Was simply a solution to a problem.
The install of Hi-Line fenders will limit the space the OEM filter box is located so relocation or change of the filter box is a must.
It may be better ways, maybe more aesthetics too for accomplish the same result, I do like paper filters inside a box as OEM engineers designed.
Hope this write up help someone later down the road.
