Trail finds

When we were kids "exploring" the woods in upstate New York, we found a school bus floating in a swamp miles from any road. In retrospect, it was probably pretty dumb to lift the emergency door on the roof to go inside but what can you expect from a group of 12 year olds?

All this brings back memories of all kinds of things we've stumbled upon.

I live in an area that has had silver mining for over 100 yrs so we run up on old mining gear a lot. Plus lots of lead contaminated creeks or ponds.... they're a rust color, almost orange.

Found multiple cars, including an old Belair sedan once. It was tipped up on it's side & 1/2 burnt. Inside it I found a license plate. Turned out to be the front license plate of the truck that had rammed it & flipped it up on it's side, and burnt it. Stupid part is it was a personalized plate of a guy I knew at school! I grabbed the plate & planned to confront him about it. Less than a week later he was riding a motorcycle without a helmet..... right into a telephone pole. Killed him. I ended up giving the plate to his best friend.

I’ve run into lots of abandoned cars.

Also just between Cle Elum and Elensburg there’s an old gold mining town named Liberty, lots of cool mines up there, and rattler snakes.
Funny thing about Liberty is I’ve been jeepin there literally all my life (dad and uncle are/were Jeeper’s since the 70’s) but one year when I was in my Jeep we were up there in August and ran into a HUGE group of stargazers up on top of lion rock. These people were organized, We bought ice, coffee and burgers out in the middle of a field up on top of a mountain. It was pretty cool, we’re talking telescopes that cause more than my Jeep/tow rig/camper/trailer combined. Super cool people. There’s a super easy gravel road to get up there. They told us it’s the best place to view the yearly meteor shower.

Oh yeah, once when I was probably 12 give or take a couple years, my dad and I were out running the ol Naches trail and we passed this old van parked on the side of the road. Looked like it’d been there a couple days, but it was in a camping spot and it’s a pretty common sight out there. When we were going home it was still there and my dad jokes to me that there’s probably a dead body in there......there was, we saw it on the news a couple days later

My coolest ding is a pick axe head near an old mine in the Colorado backcountry. If it had not need raining and freshly eroding the road I never would have seen it. We had stopped to take pictures of some mining ruins and I actually stubbed my foot into it. It now resides on my wall

I worked for almost 40 years as a Land Use Planner and Land Development Manager before I retired 7 years ago. I spent a lot of time on trails, in forests and fields and along and in watercourses. Most of it was on foot but I was able to do a lot of data collection, photography, etc. in off road in vehicles too … my Jeep. Much of it was with specialists which was always interesting … Biologists, Arborists, Archaeologists, vibration and blasting experts, etc. as well as other Engineers and Planners.

We saw a lot of interesting things over the years, not always pleasant. Way more dead animals than I wanted to see. I've stumbled across many skeletal remains and some pretty close to it. Many dismembered animals; the severed heads of 3 coyotes sitting consecutive fence posts for example. One of the worst was a 30m x 30m dumping of animal waste (cows) that had been butchered and the remains left on our land. We saw lots of wildlife too which was always good … deer, beaver, turkey, moose … no bears … and more birds than I could possibly remember. Once I rescued a lamb that had its head stuck in a fence; not easy as I'm sure it thought I was there to finish it off.

I came across several marijuana operations, none booby trapped, or at least I don't think so! Many buildings that were supposed to be vacant but weren't. I had to evict several of them which was never fun. Lots of abandoned vehicles that I had to get rid of. One of the strangest was, after doing all of our background work and getting all of our approvals for a project, we finally got to the earthworks. Within an hour we dug up human remains.

There is a thread over on wrangler forum called "strange creepy things found on the trail". Worth a read if you have some time.
