I thought I would post up an overview/review of my TrailBox and Winch Accessory Kit. I haven't actually seen anyone else with one of these Daystar Cam Cans...not sure if thats a good or bad thing, lol. Anyhow, I really like using mine as a home for all my winch rigging and gear now that I have my M8000-S installed and is getting some use. This keeps these things out of my Jeep and contains everything pretty well.

There are 2 main concerns people have with these TrailBoxes and one is the integrity of the clam shell hatch door, which can potentially be pried open, and the other is the waterproofness of the box, as there is no gasket or seal in-between the clam shell door and the main body. So depending on where you live or where you go, you may not want to leave this permanently on the spare, but only connect it when hitting the trail. It can be broken into potentially but so can anything...I think it does a pretty good job considering what it is and whats its intended use is. In regards to the waterproofness, water will absolutely get in if you buy one of these and install it. There is however a fix for that which I have discovered and have certainly put that to the test here in the PNW. I can now leave my gear inside without fear of water damaging my electronics or my straps and gloves getting soaked and growing mold or anything weird.

The "fix" for waterproofness is to buy 10 feet of 1/4" shock cord and cut it into 3 pieces that are roughly 28" long. Take the 2 ends of each piece and tie them together in a strong knot, then feed the looped end of each piece through 3 empty holes in the Mounting Plate. The knot of each piece acts as an anchor and then can be stretched out and around the TrailBox when its mounted and secured on the boxes "outer cams". This provides the tension necessary to keep the hatch closed enough for the inside to not get wet or let moisture through. (The outer cams are there so you can attach a 2nd TrailBox if you have the double extension bar).

Daystar should include 3 stretch straps with this kit...to me this is the only flaw.

So everything fits inside really well, nothing is jam packed, and i'm happy with the outcome. I have used this for other things previously but since getting my new winch, have dedicated this for my associated gear and is a nice addition to the Jeep!
(The total weight of the TrailBox + Winch Accessories = 13.8lbs).

There are also other colors of this TrailBox available than black if anyone is interested i've included links below to where you can find them. http://www.daystarsuspensionparts.com/kj71035or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0126BN8DG/?tag=wranglerorg-20

PS: Don't forget a decent waterproof lock! This is the one I use:

I appreciate that. I couldn't use it down here because I need to cover my tire. It looks pretty useful though. If my spare wouldn't get sunbaked, I would consider one. It doesn't look like there is much room to spare haha. Bummer it isn't waterproof stock though for you in the Pacific Northwet!

Well I dunno if you have a sweet tire cover that you wouldn't want to poke holes in, but you could install this kit over your tire cover. All you would do is use these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006VJO5K0/?tag=wranglerorg-20 to hold your tire on the mount, they will bring the backing plate just about flush with where the tire cover is. Poke 3 holes for these bolts to pop through, and you bolt the plate on.

It could work if you were interested, it would just be more custom than most.

Nice solution. I like it! Anything that saves room inside the TJ

I use ammo cans for my winch accessories... Snatch block, extra D rings etc.....but then I have it in the box inside my Jeep. Ammo boxes are water tight and come in different sizes and you can fabricate a lock to have them have locked. You could mount an ammo can on your spare tire if you wanted to free up room inside your Jeep.

Interesting. I need to find something to mount on the outside. I often run a hitch hauler and cannot open the gate when it is mounted. So getting to stuff behind the back seat is a pita.

I have the same frustrating problem. If my hitch on the cargo carrier dipped about 4 inches I could open the gate. I wish there was a solution to this. Maybe some kind of a drop hitch with a receiver that wouldn't stress the bumper excessively. Like this:

I use the HF atv hauler. Works great off road because it sits up but, it also keeps the door from opening more than about 2". Would be cool to find something that hinges.

This TrailBox is a pretty clean looking solution for those looking to store stuff like a winch kit outside the vehicle and still be easily accessible. These things can also be mounted on any flat surface of on any tubular bars as well.

FYI, I have seen those hitch type baskets available for the spare tire too if your partial to those types. Your probably looking for something like these: https://www.quadratec.com/categorie...racks/cargo_sport_racks/above_spare_tire_rack that still allows you to carry a bunch of stuff plus have tailgate access. The hitch baskets are just so much cheaper.
