As I said, I had to re-tension them once on the way there and they stayed tight on the way back.Wow. I assumed it was just the nature of the straps. Mine are four years old. Maybe I'll call them and ask about it.

That is true, you want the strap to overlap in the ratchet mechanism BEFORE you start tightening them. One other thing that came to mind is when I talked with Mac’s previously they said to leave the straps really loose when you start ratcheting them. You want to have a lot of strap in the mechanism.
That's really helpful. I haven't been doing that so maybe a practice change on my part will stop the "stretching"--perhaps it's not really stretching but it is slipping. That is true, you want the strap to overlap in the ratchet mechanism BEFORE you start tightening them.

my first thought is to wonder if I have a stake pocket right next to each wheel at the point I park my Jeep to even the load correctly. I doubt it.What do you think of this system?

Hauled away to where might I ask? After watching the guy tie down my Jeep this weekend, to haul it away, it was so much easier to secure it at the wheel. Securing it by the axle is such a pain and I have yet to figure out an easy way to do that. I'll happily take any pointers there!
