Found adjustment bolt, loosened and slid all the way out but grinding when going from 4H to 4L.

What am I doing wrong? Instructions say to be in 4L when doing the adjustment. Doesn’t seem like I can slide it out any farther. Photo posted. The clean metal part is where it was.

+1 on the cable. They seem expensive at first but, they shift like butter and you will not find your self laying in mud/rocks trying to pop your crap back in gear.

Can you move the lever to position it on the clean spot ? Stock lineage can get a bit sticky and most of us go to a Savvy or Novac cable actuator.
I saw the threads on the Savvy product. Might go that route but still want to try to get this right.

The clean spot is where I moved it from. Instructions shown below.

Update - I tried adjusting the linkage every which way. Fully to end and every spot in between. 2H works obviously, 4H works (clicks in well), but can’t get it to 4L. The 4WD dash light indicator flicks on in 4H and ALMOST clicks on in 4L but lots of grinding.

Must I get the Savvy cable? Or anything else I can do to fix the linkage?

You can buy the drop bracket that Boogieman mentioned, as a matter of fact I have one I'm not going to use. If you cover the shipping it's yours if you choose to go that way

+1 to savvy cable
I installed it when I did my body lift. It shifts like butter.
My linkage was rusty as fuck
I broke the factory linkage on 2 of my previous jeeps
