Transfer case linkage install issues

Working on a 97 TJ. 4.0 manual transmission.
Trying to get the transfer case linkage connected to the transfer case. I think I've tried the transfer case lever every way and still can get things to line up.
A while back my dad rebuilt the transfer case and never got it re installed in his jeep. I am now working on getting it back together.
Is it possible that the transfer case shift lever bolt/rod that sticks out of the transfer case isn't clocked correctly inside, causing the shift lever to be in the wrong spot?
I have no idea what things look like inside this transfer case or any other

You're on the right track. It's possible that the internal components of the transfer case, specifically the shift lever bolt or rod, are misaligned. This can cause the external shift lever to be in the wrong position, making it impossible to connect the linkage.
