I plan on changing my trans fluid soon here, right now I'm at 156,000 miles and I've been told to not even change it at that point because it could potentially hurt the transmission. Is this true and should I even do it? And If so what transmission fluid would you recommend.

A great place to start is the Wrangler TJ Fluid Capacities post in the Frequently Asked Questions Forum. :)

X2. This thread has all the recommend fluids, fluid capacities, etc., based off which transmission you have in your TJ.

I will add that if it's an automatic, there's a helpful how-to article on how to change your automatic transmission fluid here: How to flush the automatic transmission on your Jeep Wrangler TJ

You should change your fluid. That myth that got started about not changing it once it gets X amount of miles, that's bullshit in my opinion. Nothing other than a silly myth / rumor that got started on the internet. Do yourself (and your transmission) a favor and change it ASAP!
