Travelling long distances in a Jeep Wrangler TJ

Don't have the trailer option, so I drive my TJR to out of state rides. 35's, auto, 5.13's, soft top, A/C. I've found that ear plugs reduce the fatigue from noise. Set the cruise for the speed limit and stay in the slow lane. In 2019 we drove from Cleveland, OH to Deadwood, SD. Combination sightseeing and going to Black Hills Jeep Jamboree. Kept the speed around 72 through SD with the 80 mph speed limit. Stayed in the slow lane and didn't have any issues, very little traffic. Stopped to see sights every couple of hours, called it a day after about 10 hours.

This came up on another thread- and I feel its relevant here-

Consider new seat foam from Summit Racing. It is not slightly better, it is way, way better than any decades old stock foam- think 2024 car quality.

I was really surprised. About to order 5 more, 3 for mine and 2 for a buddy.

Even if you aren’t traveling cross country, you will like it.

You guys need to watch the “Expedicion of the Americas” on youtube. Mark Smith and some boys travelled from the south end of South America to Alaska in ‘78 CJ 7’s. Those guys would have loved coil springs.

Howdy All

There’s a few of us up here , in the peace country area, in north eastern British Columbia , CANADA, with a Long term goal to tackle the rubicon trail
• distance from VANCOUVER is approximately 1600 km, plus ad on another 1200 for us to get to Vancouver
• total of ~ 2800 km / 1600 miles one way
•your travel recommendations be much appreciated eg:
• each one roading, trailering, flat towing, carhauler (no fun, where do you put all drivers and spotters 🙈🤣)
• as for roading each JEEP, what’s a bearable daily pavement driving distance in our rigs
• possibly considering to run on pizza cutter wheels n tires plus pack trail wheels, just saying

Thx in advance

I’d prefer to tow on a trailer.

I’ve driven the 930 miles one way to Moab three times and I cut it into two days. How far you can go in a day is really dependent on your motivation. I had a hardtop and full doors. The drive wasn’t bad, but if I broke down I’d be in trouble.

I did lose my idler pulley in the Green River area. My serpentine was coming apart. I made it 40 miles to the nearest O’Reilly and back on the road in 30 minutes. 🙂

You did remind me, I had my tow rig transmission fail as I was leaving Moab.

Had to rent a truck to pull the trailer home, didn't have trailer brakes on it so Mrs App still drove the LJ to Denver before putting it on the trailer.

That had to suck. It’s still safer to have a truck and trailer. However, a truck and trailer are more expensive than the Jeep! I really need to go that way, but right now I have nowhere to store a truck or a trailer or vice versa the Jeep. I’d like to build one of those single dually axle trailers some day.

In the Trimmer?

Hell I’m just gettin old and tired of arriving nearly deaf and vibrating after driving over 1000 miles just to get to a decent destination.
Now that our jeeps are getting 20+ years old it’s nice to tow them with a comfy F-350 diesel.

Keeps the wife and dog happy as well😄

It’s got nothing to do with the Jeeps getting 20 years older…

🙂
