I replaced injectors on my 2001 TJ Sahara (4.0) about a week ago. Suddenly, the other morning I started it up and it had a miss. Up till then, it ran perfect. I left it sit and when I got home, replaced the plugs knowing a few old injectors where really bad. Started in up and it still runs like crap. Let it run a bit and it started smoking (black and blue smoke), with a terrible smell of fuel. Changed out the PCV valve, which helped a bunch, but it is still running extremely rich. It takes about 25 seconds of turning over before it starts compared to firing right off before.
I’m being told its likely the fuel regulator. No check engine lights, but I can clear out the block with black smoke. I have used up a 1/4 tank of gas just idling over the past 2-days. Does this make sense to anyone? I have ordered the pump assembly as my skid plate needs replaced anyway. Was also told it could be the MAP sensor. TPS is newer as is the air/fuel. It’ll idle but it has a miss. Let it idle for a bit and it will fill the garage with fuel and smoke.
I’m all ears - Am I heading in the right direction with the pump and regulator?

For clarification, what symptoms led you to replace the fuel injectors? Did you replace them because of the rough starts & smoke or did this all happen after you replaced the injectors?

I replaced them only because it seemed to have a very slight miss at low speeds, and when on the highway, it would trip the engine light, showing misfires on multiple cylinders. Replaced O2’s a while ago and light would go off during town driving, but if I put my foot into it or ran up the rpm’s, it would trip. New injectors were a thought as I felt if the injectors were in bad shape, it was likely starving for fuel. Once changed, I couldn’t get the light to come on and it ran amazing. The previous owners did no maintenance other than change the oil. It has 193k on it and has ran amazing until Wednesday morning. Never smoked and started fine until Wednesday. The injectors I installed are Bosch 7-hole. Not opposed to replaced them again, but it doesn’t make sense to be injectors when it turns over for 25-seconds before starting and smells like its dumping fuel. The plugs I pulled out looked fine, but I was in the beginning stage of throwing parts at the problem.
