Hey guys I love my 2004 tj but it’s been having so many issues lately. When I get on the highway I’ll start doing about 2200 rpms and 50-60 mph and I start getting. Violent front end vibration my dash and steering wheel shake but it’s not death wobble. My friend said his Toyota had a similar thing and turned out to be the cv axle. But almost everything I’m seeing online says it’s tires imbalance. I have new tires and for them balanced but even before the new tires and after I’m still getting it. Help please.

If it is not DW and not tire balance, then maybe a bent wheel or axle shaft? I would also be suspicious of the drive shaft double Cardan going bad. If it is that you should take care of it right away. Tie up the drive shaft and see if it goes away.

What is Dw? How much do you think it’d be to fix it if it was the drive shaft

Death wobble. Rebuilding the double Cardan in the drive shaft takes maybe $100-$150 in parts. To be honest, it might be better to spend $369 and just put a new drive shaft on from Tom Woods. But I only suggest checking out the shaft because it’s failure can cause catastrophic damage to the transfer case.

Ok how urgent is it? It’s very violent on the highway at that speed but on regular roads at 40ish it’s totally fine. I’ve been spending so much on repairs lately

If the double Cardan is going bad and causing a lot of vibration you should not even move the Jeep. That is why I say disconnect the drive shaft at the differential, and tie it up to the frame. Drive it around (in 2WD only!) and see if the vibration goes away. I think this is probably not the cause of your problem but I just worry about these things because I have had a couple of double Cardans go bad.

k thanks. Do you think it could possibly be just out of alignment and needs a tire balance?

You said it happened before and after you replaced and balanced the tires so I discounted that possibility. Still, it seems an awful lot like unbalanced tires. Normally, alignment wouldn’t cause this.
