Warn 8274 experts advice

I have bought 4 old 8274s and have never paid more than $400 for them. Maybe they are harder to find in your area?

@Blackjack is the resident Warn expert here.

Thanks. That answers my question. Seems about double what it should be. Plus the refurb costs put it way over.

Obviously it needs to power in and out with no issue. Next is to make sure the brake is not frozen. Hold the inner plate and then try to rotate the outer and it should move about .75-1 inch. If it does not move the brake is frozen and more the brake is worn and either way it will need a service kit and torn down. It definitely looks to have been used a bit so I would always try to get the price down.

IMHO, price isn't terrible. Id feel better about it at $600, especially since it doesn't have a controller. That's likely a mid/late 80s winch. Maybe it needs work, maybe it doesn't, 8274 will run for years. The older ones are becoming more scarce.

I have a first year that I paid $500 for a few years ago, it works but needs to be rebuilt.

I also have 38631 m8274-50, it was a lil more than the $500 I paid for the first one.

For the record, I am no expert

How much does it cost to rebuild ?

^^^^^^^^ This is your expert here....pay attention to what he suggests!

Thanks for the advice. Helps to know what to look for. I may try to round up a controller and check it out.

He's dropped the price once so chances are he's willing to drop some more.

I'll target $600 and see how it goes. I'm notorious for dragging home stuff that needs work and at that price I can dump a few bucks into it.

Like I say, there's someone better to answer these questions.

At $600 (a price at which Id be ok) purchase price, you could likely have a $1000 in it pretty easily with rebuilding brake, seals, bearings and buying a controller.

Add to that, new rope. It can get expensive quickly, but its a Legendary 8274!

And the current price for the current 8274 with steel line is $2700 you can throw a lot of shekels at an old one and still be money ahead.

Agreed.

Plan to hit up some buddies at work tomorrow for a controller I can use just to try it out. Picture looks like a 6 pin connector but the old Google machine keeps referencing a 5 pin. Am I missing something?

More holes than used pins is all. The older winches only used three of the six pins.

Some shameless 8274 winch porn. I never got bored looking at mine after having it polished. This is a 1978.

So barring any damaged hard parts, the two most basic items to purchase are the 8409 brake service kit that runs $100 and the 8680 bushing kit $46. You will need some 30wt oil or better is 50wt synthetic and a bit of good grease.

Well my 8074 converted to an 8274 cost me almost 2k with the synthetic rope, motor upgrade and full rebuild
