Warn M8000 repair

My warn M8000 motor is dead.

Opened it up and found two springs shorted and two brushes partially scorched.

None of the local electric motor or starter/alternator places have the brushes and
springs, they say they are unique to Warn.

Warn won’t sell the individual parts to repair.

Anyone have any sources or maybe a broken M8000 they want to sell?

Or any better ideas?

What vintage of M8000? Can you take a pic of the brush set?

M8000 is about 5 years old.

There are burn marks on two of the brush blocks and a couple of turns of two springs are burned away. I found spring chunks in the casing. I didn’t take pictures.

I'm in process of repairing an M12000/M15000. I ordered a Warn motor from Amazon
That may be what I ultimately have to do. It’s probably about 20 bucks in parts that need to replaced but nobody wants to sell small parts.

There are two different motors that winch could have. Do the brushes have coil or tape springs?

Burned brushes can be cleaned with 600 grit sandpaper if you don't damage them when they are removed. If Warn doesn't sell the springs you can find similar style springs in starter motors and bend them to fit. I know the shop you took it to said they don't have them but they are all pretty similar. I just had to refurbish my winch motor a few years ago due to water damage and even the commutator was burned black when the brushes seized but it all cleaned up fine.

Not sure what the difference is. The parts place does ask for serial numbers when buying a motor for the M8000 so I suspect that takes into account the motor difference.

Older Bosch motors used a brush cage with tape springs. Later Saco motors have a brush plate with coil springs. Middle pic is Saco.

Is 78710 brushes and springs? And by brush plate do you mean the plastic piece everything mounts to? That is ok on mine.

Is 78710 really available or is it like some of the parts that you try to order and then two weeks later the place tells you that it is discontinued?

If you have two springs and two brushes, I would love to buy them from you.

Call this Warn parts supplier and ask him about parts for your motor. He has been in the business for many years and may have NOS parts. He is local to me and knows his stuff.

Thanks, I’ll try them in the morning.

Did you try contacting Winch Service Parts/Redding Four Wheel Drive?

What did they tell you about parts for your winch motor?

Yes the brush plate is the plastic piece. The 78710 is available although you are best served to go through a Warn Service Center as they are more likely to have it in stock. Send me a PM with your address and I can see what postage is to get some brushes to you.

I forgot about this link, called them today. Winch Service Parts has the most helpful phone tech I have ever talked to. I told hime what I needed and he told me 78710, (he knew the number without looking) and confirmed it had all the parts I needed. I ordered one right away. I know where I will be calling from now on.

I just can’t understand why WARN and two of the winch “repair” companies I called say that these parts are not available separate.

Thank you for the offer and your help. I ordered the 78710 kit.
My faith in the internet has been renewed after this thread.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I've spoken with Winch Service Parts (aka Redding Four Wheel Drive) several times but have not yet had occasion to purchase something. They are less than 5 miles from me.

By the way, the "phone tech" you spoke with was most likely Jack Mitchell, the owner of the business. He and his wife drive down the mountain from Trinity Lake to Redding every day to open the doors. Warn is going to lose a valuable resource when he finally does retire.
