I found a winch this morning listed as a Warn 8000lb winch. The sticker said XD8000i, but Warn doesn't have one of those. But makes the XD9000i.

So I took a chance and bought it for $250.

The sticker had been scratched to make an 8 rather then the actual 9. The model number confirmed it. So now I need to clean, paint, and service it. He said it moves in and out but we'll see for certain tonight. It's had some outside time, but the motor housing is the rusty part. The rest isn't too bad.

The freespool works and I have a serial number for parts if needed. I have tomorrow off so I'll have a chance to mess around with it.

There was an X8000i and a XD9000i.

I found that after researching a while last night. Thus is definately an XD9000i. You can see the 90xx on the sticker in the bottom left of the remaining sticker in the first picture. Looking at this picture from @dvngdg 's thread on one they found, it matches.

Time to test it, then unspool the cable and dig in.

It free spooled fine. I can hear the solenoids click but the motor isn't moving. So I'll trouble shoot electrical connections first.

The drum is rusty on the sides but the cable and center is good. Worse case new motor, paint and synthetic line. But I'm optimistic I can get it running.

What did you use for paint? I got the winch motor going. It goes out not but not in. So hopefully its something minor.

Straight forward disassembly. The previous owner put a longer bolt in to hold the cable on the spool. It cut its own path.

I cleaned all the motor contacts and it started moving both directions. Brushes look good.

Now I need to get the gears out everything prepped for paint. Then re-grease it and put it back together. I'll put 100 or 125 foot synthetic cable back on instead of this heavy stuff. I think the rollers are around 10 lbs.

I got all the bolts out but the gear end is rusted together so I need to work it slowly to not mess up the surfaces.

Oh and I think I need this shaft.

It looks a little Warn on the edges. Ha ha.

Just a couple more pieces and I can start paint. The planetary gears were in some serious goo and water got in somewhere. The one below, had paint from the carrier holding up one gear occasionally. I sanded it off and will grease good when it goes back together. I need the shaft and a couple gaskets. I'm glad the motor worked.

Use some marine grease when you go back together. It will help with the water problem.

looking good and some fast progress.

I had yesterday off so I just got to it.

It looks like around $80-100 in miscellaneous parts (with 10-15% of that shipping). Then $250+ for new synthetic rope and recovery gear.

New XD9000i winches are running around $1400, and I'll be at around $600, or $320 if i put the cable back on.

We did Easter with the family yesterday. So today I got a chance to strip paint off the rest. It looked good then would just flake off. So I took it all off. Sanded some casting imperfections, wiped everything with mineral spirits, then primered with a self etching primer.

The last gear finally came out too. Some crud holding it up. So I'll 1000 and 4000 grit that surface. It was so packed with grease I didn't notice the orientation so I'll need to find that out. My guess is machined ring in the back to catch the handle.
